My husband and I took a day trip and caught the car ferry out to Vinalhaven Island. After seeing the sights we stopped here for lunch. It was open in the off season and had quite a few people in it. It is a really fun place with great service, and great food.

Nebo Lodge

Reviewed By J--Harpswell - Harpswell, Maine

This was one of those meals where getting there was half the experience.

Staying at Vinalhaven (where Tuesday is the day most restaurants choose to stay closed), we drove up for half an hour to the north side of the island through interesting countryside, to a boat landing. There a launch met us for a ride ($20 RT/person) across the Thoroughfare channel to North Haven island, where a stroll through the village led us up to the Nebo.

It's a popular place, a bit noisy at times indoors, with food as interesting as the journey to find it. The North Haven oysters were tiny, just the size I prefer, though less briny than Damariscotta ones. My halibut was prepared just right, and my companions had no complaints whatsoever about their choices. The crispy kale side dish may make a kale lover out of me yet. The coffee affogato ended the meal just right. Good wine selection and service.

And the return home was just as interesting.

This is a small town coffee house done well. The coffee is fresh. The food is made from scratch daily and the owners are community minded.

The decor is made up of things that mean something to the owners not some slick cookie cutter theme from a designer 1000 miles away.

A coffee house how it should be - locals and tourists side by side enjoying simple good food.

Living year-round on North Haven limits your choices in the Winter, but with the advent of Summer, Mickey Campbell, the operator of Cooper's Landing, puts together a wide and varied menu satisfying tastes for a wide range of food needs. We get the 'Holigan,' a curried chicken mixture with greens on a whole wheat or tomato flavored wrap. Service is pleasant and reasonably quick. Don't wait five minutes before you have to board the ferry boat or you will miss out, unless you grab one of their prepared sandwiches. Ice Cream is inside this year and is Gifford's of Maine-Great stuff! The Landing is open everyday, except Tuesday for Breakfast and Lunch, closing at 2 pm for food and 4 pm for ice cream

SALT Restaurant

Salt is little restaurant on a remote island. Our menu is small - maybe a half dozen starters and about that many main dishes. We make a real effort to source as locally as possible - we buy our lobsters, scallops and halibut directly from the fishermen; our beets and carrots are brought in the back door by our friend Don who grows them about a quarter mile away, and our oysters come from about 10 miles away. We cook simply so the main ingredients take center stage, and we play with world seasonings for interest and depth. Our roots are in the classics, not Brooklyn, and our restaurant and our soul is squarely in Vinalhaven.

Eaten hear once. Food was ok. Mostly I wanted to warn any customers going in for a drink that for some reason there seems to be a lot of fights at this establishment. Not sure if it is the combination of stiff drinks, unprofessional bartenders or the atmosphere created by varying socioeconomic classes. Bloody fights and slashed tires seems to be the norm lately down on Main Street since this place opened for the season.

Calderwood' reputation is getting around. The other night boatloads of customers came from neighboring islands to dine. It is loud, packed, fun and delicious. The menu has expanded to have non-pizza items. I usually have pulled pork from a local pig. Beer is from the downstairs brewery. Everything is fresh. Long wait for a table. Lovely friendly waitstaff. Relax and enjoy it.
