Where to Eat in Ollantaytambo: The Best Restaurants and Bars

March 18, 2018 Misti Hsu

Ollantaytambo has some of the oldest continuously-occupied buildings in South America. Once a stronghold of Inca resistance to Spanish colonization, it's remarkably well-preserved. Many travelers visit Ollantaytambo because it's the beginning of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, but don't rush through—the ruins are fascinating.

This place has a cute upstairs with lots of Seating. We ordered the vegetarian burgers that came on a huge plate with salad and fries. Very filling. On another visit had the Heart Salad which was also huge. Prices around 22 soles. The other dishes going to other customers looked equally delicious.

Café Mayu is a cozy café/bar connected to El Aubergue Restaurant and located right on the platform for trains to and from Machu Picchu. We went there late afternoon after a strenuous day of sightseeing in the Sacred Valley. The café offered espresso drinks, sweet and savory snacks, liquors, and four taps from a local brewery Cervecería del Valle Sagrado, with offering ranging from something crispy and refreshing to a dark porter to one unique draft made from a local semilla grain. The beer was delicious and came with a complementary bowl of salted corn kernels as a snack. We didn’t know and had already bought different types of corn and beans.
We enjoyed our beer on the bar stools looking out the wide windows into the train tracks. With the tall Andes right behind the train tracks, it was a delight to watch the sunlight dance in and out of the billowing clouds and the fog forming and disappearing from one moment to another. The train tracks were sometimes empty and quiet and sometimes burst into activities as trains arrived and departed, as train station staff hustled about with their tasks, and as passengers – both locals and tourists – rushed in and out, some with excitement and some with exhaustion.
A train station is a transient place, but if you have time to pause and enjoy a glass of delicious beer, Café Mayu offers a front-row seat to watch the world go by in a beautiful setting. As long as the beer lasts, it might be worth becoming an observer instead of an actor in the moving world. You might encounter a beautiful moment as we did.
Stop by the café on the way back from Machu Picchu. Or if you are in town and just want to go get a drink and watch people as we did, just tell the security guards at the gate of the station that you are going to El Aubergue, and they will let you in without a train ticket.

This place was recommended to us by the owner of the B&B we stayed at in Ollantaytambo, and boy was it a great recommendation. We really enjoyed the atmosphere (we sat on the second floor) and the food was delicious. We had the Anticuchos Mixtos, Envoltini de Alpaca, Lomo de Alpaca al grill, Lomo Saltado, and the Espagueti a la Amatriciana peruana. All of them were delicious! The quinoa risotto that came with the Lomo de Alpaca was divine, probably the best thing I've tasted since we've been in Peru. Definitely a quaint little place that if we ever get back to Ollantaytambo, we will visit again.

Visited as friends based on the high rating here and in guide books. With a number of allergies I was limited to a veggie rice dish which was tasty and well cooked, but not quite what I wanted, and felt like for such a well liked place they maybe could have been more accomodating! My friend had the potato with lo mo in which was enjoyed. Lemonades lovely also. Expensive even for Ollantaytambo, but well presented. Probably would return.

This place is amazing! It took me by surprise. We are several meals there and all were top quality.
I had fruit salad with granola and natural yoghurt for breakfast. Both were huge servings! The coffee was also very good.
At lunch I had one of their salads. They have several options and you can pick 2-3 to eat. Again the savings were massive, all very fresh and tasty.
In addition the owner is incredibly friendly and there's good wifi.

This shop is on the main plaza in Ollantaytumbo. I stopped in for coffee and wifi. It didn't feel like they were a specialty coffee shop. The coffee here isn't any better or worse than any other restaurant in town. The service and the decor were acceptable. I didn't have anything to eat.

Eat here twice, the food was good, the service pleasant and efficient but ...
Well the second time I eat here I had a very good Lomo Saltardo, which I thoroughly enjoyed, but I had clearly ordered a different alpaca dish which I had been assured was available. Perhaps they didn't want to scare me away or worse still did not expect me to notice that the dish I had ordered was composed of very different ingredients to the one I got. OK with a saltardo sauce it is effin difficult to distinguish between alpaca and beef ... but the alpaca dish came with a whole different chorus of ingredients.
They could have said ...oops sorry the cat nicked the alpaca when we left the fridge door open for a second or two or sorry my daughter was too embarrassed to deal with the butcher saying that the alpaca was a bit off but he offered her a really nice bit of beef fillet at a bargain price 'cos that would give the punter a better deal.
The first time I eat here the food was very good and I got what I ordered. My wife also got what she ordered and insisted we go back because it was bl**dy good food.
She also got a lomo saltardo and as she too had ordered the alpaca dish was most angry ... OK perhaps I should have said something, but its a small place, low season and run by nice people.

Nice little place with a selection of sandwiches, pizza, pastries and salad. It was very clean with good service and great prices.
The salad was standout - fresh greens and crispy chicken pieces. The pizza was ok, but did hit the spot. We ordered the chorizo one and that was very tasty.
The restaurant also has a great selection of baked goods and pastries including some health bar type items that would be good to buy before a hike or visiting the ruins.
