Nice dinner on a cool evening in late June seated at a table pulled up close to the toasty central firepit. Yummy locro and empanadas. Pleasant, attentive, accommodating service (they let us in early, though they were still closed, to warm up around the fire).

We went a little bit out of the way to try the wine ice cream. The flavor would not be my favorite, but Miranda heaped it on top of my flavor of choice so that I could try it - which I did. It is a little different , so you have to have some.

Our excursion to Cafayate was amazing but even better when we decided to skip the regular, tour-guide suggested restaurant and we went to this place. Nice place, great atmosphere and above all the empanadas were amazing. They prepared them at the moment; so you eat them warm. They have a great selection. We loved the arabe, calabresa. We tried them all! Go for the empanadas they are their best product!

Don't expect a real gourmet restaurant here. This is very good, decent basic stuff, well prepared with a very good service and advise, with an outdoor dining option.
Wine service perfect (choice, advise, decanter, temperature), which is rare (most red wines shall be served between 16 and 18 degrees, and here they do).

We spent a busy morning with our guide driving us through the Quebraba de las Conchas + wine tasting to Cafayate, which is a great wine area. The town itself is picturesque and the restaurant delightfully located in the main square, just opposite the Cathedral. The menu was huge and the food really well cooked. Our waiter was extremely helpful and the bill reasonable.

El Hornito

We kept coming back to El Hornito whist in Cafayate! We love our food and normally spend a fair effort of our time trying to find good, away from the tourist crowd, places were the locals eat. Well after being told to eat here by more than a couple of locals, we never really ate anywhere else in town. Its away from the plaza (and the tourists crowds) and has a couple of great big wood fired ovens sitting out the front which is constantly churning out dozens and dozens of some of the best empanada’s we’ve ever had (we had more than our fair share over a few days to make sure!).They also do some other good wholesome local dishes (tamales, lentil as well as meat stews, etc).If you are looking for tables clothes, napkins and fancy food – don’t come here. But if you want to eat some decent and tasty food, we recommend this place. If you’re not after a meal, just sit outside and drink some beer and munch down a few empanadas with the locals.

During our trip on ruta 40 we passed by Colome because of the great stories from people who recommended the place. The food was good. Unfortunately we arrived late which meant that the kitchen was already closed. Nevertheless we could still order salads. The food was good, especially the quinoa salad. We have tasted plenty of wine and saw a short video on the history of the bodega. A downside of the trip to Colome was that the museum was closed so check the opening times beforehand!

Bodega Piattelli Cafayate is the newest of the two Piattelli wineries, with its sister winery located in Agrelo, Mendoza. This winery opened in 2013 and features exquisite architecture, attention to detail, beautiful Gardens, careful presentation of historical monuments and a gravity-flow winery. The restaurant is open daily for lunch as well as by reservation for large groups for dinner and other special events. The menu features traditional cuisine with a gourmet approach, using only local produce, spices and meat. Piattelli produces a range of wines including Malbec, Torrontes, Cabernet, Tannat and more..

THe visit to Piatelli was one of the most memorable memories we brought home from Salta. The Vineyards are impeccably cared for and the winery is spectacular. Located half-way up the hill, the buildings are tastefuully designed, surrounded by well-manicured Gardens, Fountains and a spectacular view of the valley. We ere received professionally and explained the options we had for wine tasting. Clearly, they were aware of our expectations and wishes. We were tken to a separate tasting room where they had [-repared our tasting with the top of the line wines, as we had requested. Containers to dispose fo unwanted wine, cubed bread and crackers, mnapkins, an multipl stemmed glasses were ready. The tasting of about 6 wines was very enjoyable, both because of the high quality of the wines, and the warm, professional and caring attention. Piatelli is a winner!

Really pleasant atmosphere and good live music. Thoroughly enjoyed the wine too, although their pricing policy needs looking at as it was far, far cheaper by the glass rather than the bottle!
Friendly welcome and I'd definitely return if I was in Cafayate.
