Where to Eat in Beijing: The Best Restaurants and Bars

July 15, 2017 Roger Rusk

Welcome to a capital city whose story goes back at least 3000 years. In Beijing, you'll find a wealth of history, both ancient (the Hall of Preserving Harmony, Summer Palace, Forbidden City) and more recent (Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, Tiananmen Square). For the best market experience, choose the Dirt Market over the touristy Silk Market. A visit to the Great Wall, the longest manmade structure in the world, is absolutely essential.

Black Sesame Kitchen

We are a reservations-only dining experience offering a set menu of ten courses and two wine pairings in an open kitchen where you'll learn the secrets of Chinese cuisine.

My daughter and I went here for dinner. Every single course was delicious, freshly cooked and plentiful. The restaurant is located down an alley in the Hutong, a little hard to find, but well worth the hunt. Other reviews state that it's hard to get Reservations, try calling to see if they have last minute openings. Coco was a gracious host, the chefs are talented and skilled with their craft. This was truly, the best meal that we had in Beijing.

BLEU MARINE

Best Meatballs in Beijing. Near Silk market. The Danish owner is the best Restaurant host I have ever met. Likes to talk to the guests. I DO miss Danish food sometimes when in Beijing

Reviewed By Nick T - Camberwell, Australia

Host and wait staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful. The host very generously pours you a "tea" that is of suspiciously toxic odour, and this is readily welcomed at the end of a long day/week.
The food was good, but nothing worth writing home about. The dining setting is quaint and cosy but could probably do with some dressing up. Simple things like the menu, crockery and furniture. But I guess it may be very intentionally part of the ambience.
If you're hankering for some Danish food and you're in Beijing, don't hesitate to drop in.

Beijing Haidilao Hot Pot (Wangfujing)

Reviewed By Nathan M - Canberra, Australia

Due to visiting in the middle of winter, we were promptly seated in a nice booth without any wait. None of the waitresses attending to us spoke English and we managed to order with pointing and other forms of communication. The waitresses were very helpful and we selected the mushroom hot pot with a variety of meats and vegetables. They also made us up some nice sauces and showed us exactly what to do with the food. The food was delicious and the entire experience was well worth it. We came in without having much of an idea of what to do but the wonderful hospitality and welcoming service made it an experience we will never forget.

TRB Hutong

TRB serves contemporary European cuisine and is committed to providing the highest levels of hospitality for our guests. In creating our dining space, the Australian architectural and design firm Hassell emphasized the clean, light filled and thoroughly modern lines of what was once a Television factory producing the capital's first black and white TVs. The history of the TRB compound spans 600 years: it includes ancient halls of worship, factories constructed after the Communist takeover and slogans left over from the Cultural Revolution. Renovation began in 2008, focussed on preserving all the layers of history and keeping as much as possible of the original structures.

First time dinning at TBR Hutong Restaurant, had a very good experience. Dishes are great, service is good, and dinning environment is pleasant. Especially like waiters and waitresses there, always have a nice smile on face, which makes dinning more enjoyable. Have to mention Maitre D Francisco, not only good looking, but also of etiquette, and with a great sense of humor, even joking to cheer guests up! Dinning there is not only a treat but also fun! Definitely gonna come again! Highly recommended, to ladies especially!!!!

After 15 days of Chinese cuisine we just need a nice Italian dish, we take the first and without much thought over with a taxi would arrive. The restaurant is very nice, inside the renaissance hotel. the service is impeccable, a high customer focus, excellent Italian dishes and fine wines. Stefano, the chef, advises us by customizing our choice, I got ravioli with a Parmesan fondue: one of the best in my life. I'll get also a nice chocolate cake: very good. All accompanied by a good red. Stefano treated us very well, as well as the Mexican waiter service of which I can not remember the name. Congratulations, you were great and we have a claim of the customer service really high. Account in proportion to the situation, certain €10 for the acqua panna is overkill, but within the rules of the game. Fully satisfied.

Choy's Seafood Restaurant

A trend-setting Seafood restaurant specializing primarily in Cantonese & Sichuan flavors. 6 individually designed private dining rooms, each self sufficient with own service facilities. This is a perfect setting for elegant dining.

Reviewed By mungman - Copenhagen, Denmark

I treated my parents to a seafood dinner at Choy's during Restaurant Week, and it was a decisively positive experience, if not a truly memorable one. The food was fresh and tasty, albeit coming in rather small portions considering the price. The service was not incredibly attentive but still quite friendly. The view from our table of the artificial waterfall running down the hotel wall was very pleasant to look at. Overall, we had a very good dinner but didn't feel like it was a place we would keep in mind for a really special occasion, nor did we feel that the Restaurant Week offering was a can't-miss deal.

King's Joy Beijing

Reviewed By WF50

I went with my boyfriend to King’s joy last week for dinner. The restaurant has the best ambience and the most delicate vegetarian food in town. My boyfriend’s favourite dish is the Gongtao mushroom. We ordered the single portion. Everything on the plate tastes perfect: the mushroom, crunchy chili, cheese flavoured cup that holds the mushroom and even the decorative leaves. We loved the dish so much that we ordered a second portion after we finished the first.
They also let customers leave feedbacks on a nice piece of paper using Chinese calligraphy pen and stamps. Then they would bind them into traditional Chinese style books and show them to their future customers.
Pricewise, King’s joy is the most expensive vegetarian restaurant in Beijing. We had five dishes and cost us a little bit over 700 yuan including service charges. If you are visiting Beijing and would like to try Chinese vegetarian food, I highly recommend this restaurant because overall it serves the best vegetarian food and offers the opportunity to experience the best of the Chinese culture.

The Sunday Brunch is indeed well done. The dining room and overall ambience is very elegant. Food is excellent, small serves and plenty of variety to meet the needs of all diners. Service was excellent with one exception. A staff member standing in front of the buffet totally ignored patrons and even when approached with a question (in English and Chinese) was non responsive with no smile at all. This became the topic of conversation at our table as we all experienced the same. Someone with NO hospitality skills should not be in the industry. Saying this, will most certainly be back!

Yesterday went with some friends to the Celestial Court Restaurant after it's refurbishment and must say that I consider this to be one of the best Chinese restaurants in Beijing. The decoration is great and the service has even got better not to say excellent. The new menu is amazing. As for the price I must say that compared to other restaurants it is not expensive. For my business meetings I will be using it a lot.
