Very nice. Long boat ride, about 2.5 hours but every minute was something of interest to see. Highly recommended are various other attractions nearby.

Pu Luong Nature Reserve

Reviewed By J V - Amsterdam, The Netherlands

We were looking for something off the beaten track, and we got what we looked for. We were inspired by the review of Severina, who quotes this is the Sapa which is not yet discovered yet, which is totally true. We did a 3 day 2 night independent hike, but with a local guide. There are plenty of homestays, in most of the villages. We added a map of the area as a picture. This is not to scale and not very correct. You can walk from Ban Sai to Ban Hang (2-3 hours, 4km), and from Ban Hang to Ban Kho Muong (6-7 hours, 14km). Day 3 from Ban Kho Muong to Pho Dean market (4 hours, 8km). The pads are all hiking trials and not difficult, only slippery after rain. Bring enough water because it can be hot (november). You need to arrange transport to the starting point (we arranged it from and to Mai Chau) which costs us for a car 300,000 dong (Mai Chau to ban sai) and Pho Doan market to Mai Chau 800,000 dong. Public transport exists but is very inconvenient coming from Mai Chau. A local guide is essential to find the small forest and rice field routes (which are not on the map). Mr Nghi was our guide, which speaks English (not very good but okay) and is fairly okay but not fantastic. He know the area well. His local number is:0983283343. We paid him 35 dollar a day, but it is possible for around 500,000 dong a day (but then you should pay his stay and food as well). The homestays are good and have hot showers and mostly proved mosquito nets. You need to bring water purifying tablets, or you can buy bottled water (but this is more difficult to find). 3 or 4 days are enough to see the park. There is not much wildlife, but we were amazed by the number of butterflies, some very large and beatifull colours! I put the gps tracks on strava, but I cannot post a link here. Go to this park, it's worth it and you will see what you want without the tourists.

Thung Nham Bird Garden

Reviewed By RugBugs - Northamtonshire

We visited the park whilst staying at the nearby Tam Coc Garden hotel.
It is beautifully landscaped with well signposted paths to follow. The bird watching boat ride in a sampan goes out to where 100s of birds are nesting and is very peaceful.
The caves were well lit with soft coloured lighting ( not at all 'disco' as the previous review!) and great to explore.
We really enjoyed our walk around this park and the small entrance fee was well worth it.

Mua Caves

Reviewed By JulianeRiedel - London, United Kingdom

We didn't go to the caves but on top of the mountain To reach the staircase leading up to the mountain with the lying dragon you have to walk through the ecolodge. There's a small entrance fee. When you come by bike man will annoyingly whistle to signal you to park your bike at their plot and charge you 10.000 dong. Ignore them (even if they will get rude and shout at you) and park right infront of the entrance, maybe even inside. They still will charge you though.

Ben En National Park

Reviewed By Deepesh K - Kerala, India

Bến En National Park is located in Nhu Thanh and Nhu Xuan districts, 36km from Thanh Hoa City (Thanh Hoa is in south of Hanoi, 4 hrs in bus from Hanoi).
It is firstly established in 1992, and then expanded to now encompass an area of about 16,634 hectares, including 8,544ha of primary and recovered forest. This place is not only a protected breeding ground of many rare creatures, but also an attractive destination for ecotourism with its poetic and majestic sceneries. You can do a trekking for around 4kms around the island (there won't be any guide).
Landscapes are just awesome, and the view too. The place is not so famous for foreigners and not too many locals also visit here. I visited here in July and it was so hot. If you are planning to visit this park, I would recommend to visit in autumn.
Another specialty is, there are cottages on island, and you may book a cottage for an overnight stay. In which you will have a personal boat, you can do fishing, cooking, camp fire etc.
They also has kayaking, but unfortunately it was not available in summer and will be available from autumn.
All in all, it was a nice trip.
p.s. You are not allowed to swim or take bath in the water bodies.

Tam Coc

Located in Ninh Binh province 100 km southeast of Hanoi, Hoa Lu and Tam Coc are two of the most picturesque spots in all of the north. For 41 years, from 968 to 1009 CE, Hoa Lu was the ancient capital of Vietnam. Nearby Tam Coc is often referred to as “Ha Long among the rice paddies.” Visitors are conveyed by rowboat along the peaceful Tam Coc stream past green fields and the feet of Mountains into the mouths of caves, where they encounter new surprises, like stalactites and stalagmites that shimmer like gemstones just inches from the water.

The sightseeing is mostly rice fields at water level surrounded by big Mountains. You also cross some grutes (3 in total) being the first the only where you stop seeing daylight. In the way back you are approached by boats selling stuff for you to buy and offer to your boat paddler + the tip in the end of the journey. Honestly I think that if you go to Tràng An you can skip this trip
