Stanlake Park Wine Estate

Reviewed By FMSh - Shinfield, United Kingdom

My husband and I booked this tour. Ruth was our guide. She was knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour! It was a nice way to spend the afternoon as you learnt a lot without being bored (which is normally the case when you go on vineyard guided tour). We tasted 8 different wines in generous quantity. The weather was beautiful so we were able to enjoy the bubbly they serve on arrival in the walled garden.
A great place to visit if you are in the area

The Mill at Sonning Theatre

Set on the banks of the River Thames, The Mill at Sonning Theatre promises a unique experience where your visit includes a two-course meal and a show in a beautiful converted water mill. Start your visit with a drink (or two...) in the Waterwheel Bar, or, if you visit us in the summer, take a sunny seat on The Mill Stream Terrace. From the bar make your way upstairs to our restaurant with views out over the river, where you will find your tickets and complimentary programme waiting on your table. The main course is served buffet style but our friendly staff will be on hand to take your drinks and desserts orders. After enjoying a two-course meal, prepared daily in our kitchen using only the best locally sourced ingredients, you will make your way into the main event of your visit - the theatre! The theatre itself is an intimate venue, Seating just over 200 people, air conditioned with spacious and comfy seats that won't leave you longing for legroom or calling for a cushion. During the year we produce a wide variety of plays in the theatre, including a musical over the Christmas season, and regular music and comedy nights that will have you dancing and rolling in the aisles. Whatever your tastes, in both theatre and food, you will be sure to find something to whet your appetite here at The Mill. Our Waterwheel Bar is also open for artisan coffee and homemade cakes during the day. Pop in and see us from 11am-5pm every Tuesday-Sunday.

Four of us attended The Hound of the Baskervilles. We were all so impressed, we were gripped from the very start. I have to say we were looking forward to a pleasant evening, but this play exceeded all our expectations. Atmospheric, thrilling, creepy, funny, great acting, brilliant use of the deceptivelly simple stage set and use of the theatre spaces. Defiinitely one of the best plays I have enjoyed - and I have enjoyed many. It certainly deserves the great reviews given by the press. Very cleverly crafted, this really is a must-see play. Wouldn't be surprised to see this transfer to the west end.
As always the theatre itself is a joy. Good buffet restaurant (soon to be refurbished), and great service. This small theatre provides an iintimate atmosphere that enhances whatever Performances appear there. This is the third time that I have visited along with different friends who have mobility difficulties. Each time I have booked seats I have discussed the facilities with the staff before the visit, and they have been very helpful in booking appropriate seats and ensuring assistance on the night of the visit. There is a supervised chair-lift and the staff are attentive to provide extra assistance if necessary at the buffet, the restaurant and the theatre. There are good disabled toilets on the ground floor and also at restaurant level. The night we visited, there were at least three other people who needed, and received, help with moving around. The staff are so friendly and helpful at all levels. Highly recommend this venue.

Very pleasant trip down the river where we were told the dredging has stopped since the environmental agency took over, so the river is slowly filling up and large boats may not be able to get up and down the river eventually. The trees along the banks have grown very tall and are unkept and so there is not so much to see, except some large houses with Gardens to the river.
Maple Duram estate was hardly visible through the trees, so this river cruise is more for the love of a trip down the Thames on a water vessel.

Basildon Park

An 18th-century house, a 1950s homeThis is a story of grandeur created, dissolved and resurrected - not once, but twice.Basildon Park is an impressive Georgian mansion, surrounded by glorious parkland, which was lovingly rescued from ruin by Lord and Lady Iliffe in the mid 1950s. The house you see today is a re-creation and restoration of the 18th-century mansion. They restored the elegant interior and scoured the country salvaging 18th-century architectural fixtures and fittings. They filled their comfortable new home with fine paintings, fabrics and furniture, which can still be enjoyed by visitors today.

Met my elder daughter here today on Mother's day and enjoyed the house very much. Walked around the gravelled paths and as it was a warmish day we enjoyed that too. The tearooms had a reasonable choice of food including tasty soup. The guides were informative and charming, There was an excellent buggy service to take us to the house from the car park which helped me as I can't walk too far and I would have found the walk a bit hard. The car park is tiny and I think the NT needs to try and get planning permission to extend this facility to cope with the visitors.

Kennet & Avon Canal

Reviewed By sheepygold - london

There are more than a hundred listed buildings in Reading but unfortunately the vast majority along the section of the canal and river that runs through central and East Reading are really dreadful. I walked along the Abbey Backwater to the River Kennet and then along and across Bridges on other bits. There was not much that stood out - some nice cottages maybe. The buildings that are / were the Riverside Museum are interesting as is the information board there by the weir but this is now part of a pub / restaurant. If I had more time I would have continued East along the River Kennet as it does start to become more rural quickly.
