Hachiman-bori

My wife wanted to see this location after seeing many NHK drama's . Make sure you get your english explanation from the tourist information before departing by bus to give yourself some of the historical background. The main canal along which the merchants houses were located fell in to disrepair in the 1950's and was scheduled for landfill. However some citzens resisted the landfill and tarted cleaning up the canal. Walk along the canal and get a feel of the Edo period it represents. Riverboat tous are also available although we did not take one.

Azuchi Castle Ruins

Reviewed By misocutlet - Orange, Australia

There are so many rebuilt castle keeps in Japan, but the keep of this castle has not been rebuilt, although the castle was originally built by one of the most famous warlords of Japan. Actually, the fact attracts many Japanese castle maniacs. If you have been to some Japanese Castles and tired of ferroconcrete castle keeps, this one may be interesting. The admission costs JPY500 and it takes about one hour to see everything. The castle keep ruin is located on the top of 199 meters-high Mt Azuchi, so be prepared for many steps. It is a good idea to make a side trip to Hikone Castle, which has an original castle keep.

This temple has some amazing festivals held here. I attended a Taiko (drum) festival as well as Sagicho (a float, fighting, and fire festival. For a video I helped make about it follow this link: http://youtu.be/vmYFAjv67uA but even when there isn't a festival going on, this is still a beautiful place to visit. There is also a really nice hike behind it!

The views from the Cable Car are worth the trip to the summit, so if you visit Omihachiman and the weather is wonderful take the return trip and enjoy the view. From the top of the mountain you can see the street grids developed by Toyotomi Hidetsugu and you can also enjoy the beautiful view of Azuchi Mountain, Lake Biwa and the water canals. The cost of a return ticket on the cable car was about 800 yen.

This street is one of the main ones where merchant families lived (like the Ban family), and the city has some museums dedicated to them. The Ban House is interesting, there are kimonos, folding screens, etc., and an overview of the history of the house. This place also holds links with Michigan and Kansas, so it's more interesting to me. An English tour is available and so are multiple building passes.

As part of my cycling tour around Ōmihachiman, I stopped at Chomeiji Temple and decided to climb up the stairs which is something you shouldn't do (at least when it's summer). However, climbing the stairs will reward you with a view of Lake Biwa and the temple features some beautiful pagodas. Everyone is really friendly too, and didn't mind bantering with me in Japanese.

Ruins of Mt. Hachiman Castle

Reviewed By Just-Julie-Cairns - Cairns, Australia

All that seems to be left of the castle is the remnants of a stone wall so it was quite disappointing to find that there is nothing of the castle itself, but the ride in the Cable Car and the view is worth the visit. We also visited the shrine that was on the summit. The town itself is also worth a visit as there are some lovely preserved streets here and you can ride in a boat along the waterway that was pleasant on a hot summer day.
