Top 10 Things to do in Toulouse, France

July 14, 2017 Alice Mieles

The southern France city of Toulouse is a study in contrasts. Visit the Academie des Jeux Floraux, the oldest literary society in the western world, as well as the Galerie du Chateau d'eau, the world's first photography museum. Stroll the Garonne, before visiting France's most beautiful pipe organ at the Saint-Sernin Basilica. Yet for all its medieval architecture, Toulouse is a modern city, home to the European aerospace industry, as well as bars and restaurants in bustling Place du Capitole.

Church of Les Jacobins

A simple exterior that excites the moment you step in through the doors. A rectangular room built with beautiful red stained glass windows that threw beautiful light patterns cross the interior of the church. Interestingly the opposite windows were stained in blue. The church was occupied by troops in earlier wars and horses were kept on the ground level, troops on the first level and grain on the upper levels. The frescoes on the lower level were damaged by the horse excrement etc but soaring high above and protected by the floors above the beautiful palm like roof structure has ben preserved for us to admire.

I've been travelling to Toulouse for about 20 years and only decided to visit St Sernin weeks ago. It is not different from other religious places but its history is worth knowing. The neighborhood is very nice, and the narrow paved street that connects the big city hall square to St Sernin could make a good old movie background

After touring the church that surrounds the Jacobin cloister, we spent some quality time in the cloister. It's a sculptured garden surrounded by collonaded walkways. You can see some of the church's stained-glass windows from the outside, and the one with repeated fleur-de-lis is particularly attractive. Very pleasant experience.

We enjoyed this gallery & spent around 90 minutes there. It's a very impressive building & is relatively small for a gallery, which made it a bit more enjoyable than some bigger galleries.
There's a good range of paintings & other exhibits from different periods. Certainly worth a visit & not bad value for 10 euro.

We didn't have time to go through the buildings, but we did stop and have a cup of tea on the balcony overlooking them. The area was beautiful and we will have to return and see inside another time.

Some of the best Opera and Ballet in France is seen on stage in this wonderful 18th century Theatre. A visit for the rare Albert Opera "Tiefland" left us thrilled by the quality of singing and orchestra, and assurred direction of the piece. Bravo, we will certainly be returning. This is a great opera destination.

Place du Capitole

Reviewed By Krugg31 - Nijmegen, The Netherlands

Place du Capitole was the official centre of Roman Toulouse and still is today.
It features a number of cafes with Terrace Seating (at tourist prices) but also offers a spectacular view on the town hall / opera (the Capitole itself).
There’s a nice open air market on Wednesdays, with among others a good selection of second hand books (mostly in French).
Not easily accessible by car, though.

Musee des Augustins

Beautiful building and great collections of medieval and Renaissance art. I would rate it much higher were it not for the fact that the best galleries of paintings are closed for renovation leaving the visitor with only a roomful of Academic and local painters. Quite disappointing!
