We hiked to the top but had to give up somewhere along the way as the trail is not well marked. The rangers told us only 4 km to top whereas to drive is 7 km and then 1 km walk (very easy). But after 3 hours of walking and not sure of where we were going we gave up. Views are nice except it was very hazy in February. It's all very manicured and touristy on top.

We were driving from Chiang Khan to Loei and to Phu Ruai area and came across this Reservoir called Huai Krating. Its a lake surrounded by beautiful Mountains . On the lake there are a few raft/boat operators we can rent the raft to ourselves for a whole day at 200baht - 500baht. Depending on what you want to do. We thought just floating in the middle of the lake and hav lunch n do a bit of fishing will do and it costs 200baht smallest raft comfy for 2 pax, for a whole day! Its beautiful lake n waters cool and clean for swimming too. We chose the operator jz next to the Tourist Info Center. Shaded parking area n kitchen looks clean too. The man with long tied up hair came to assist us. Wife is the cook, not as friendly. We actually did catch a huge golden carp on the lake but they didnt want to cook for us, saying she busy n cant clean n cook our fish. Didnt seem friendly n no smile.
Anyway the rafting experience was good n worth our time to detour 10mins only from main highway. Fantastic view as we sit on the raft looking all around us are Mountains. Raft is thatched roof so very cooling and not hot.

Just happened to see this very large temple while driving past, just before Phu Rua It is relatively new and enormous - still being added to. The mosaics on the statues in the grounds are incredible, there are several statues in the process of having mosaic tiles laid on them now, June 2016, which is interesting to watch, such painstaking work and so intricate. The space inside the temple is massive and very interesting, really quirky and fun.
Great garden area, pond with large fish which you can feed, heaps of car parking - some undercover, about 30 spotlessly clean toilets, a cafe and an undercover area showing details of construction and what appears to be future plans, all in Thai. Stop and have a look.

The place is worth the visit. Coniferes, rock Gardens, natural mountain top. There is only one problem: Some of the routes are not clear and cleared of trees, bamboo growing over the path. Two times we tried to follow the path from their map. The first time we turned around, because we could not pass it The second time we really got in some trouble..... We had to phone for help. The good thing is that rangers came!!! Thanks for that.
The sad thing is, that this happened a year ago too... At that time the -also foreigner- had to stay overnigth in the forest before getting found.
-Ask for clear information about the map and possibility to take that road/path.
-Leave information at the centre that you are going down, in case of (we did not....).

The special thing that made Phu Ruea stands out among other places in Thailand, I think is the nurseries. There are many many nurseries by the road side of road #21 as if it decorates the road with flowers. This place is certainly give a relaxing mind and send away all the hectic from work.

Beware of the scam merchant when you enter the car park area as he will ask for money for parking your car and extra for taking photos. If you don't speak Thai and can't send him packing, ask a Thai man to help. Everything here is free, including the car park.
I have some good photos but you don't ask or provide space for them.

Wat Somdet is a very magnificent temple in Phu Ruea. It is build from first class wood and the carving is very beautiful. It is located on one of the hill near the entrance of Phu Ruea National park. I can see the beautiful scenery of Mt. Phu Ruea from Wat Somdet.
