Udmurt Zoo

The Zoo is one of not so many attractions in Izhevsk. We were there last summer and we spent a morning in the Zoo. It is easily accessible by tram (some 10-15 min. from the city center) has many animals to see, it is well organised and clean. There is a coffee shop and a small restaurant, not bad ata all. We spent half a day there walking around, took the small train (although too expensive for the small tour it did) and tried the food at the restaurant - average quality. There is also a small shop to buy your souvenirs.

Well kept outdoor museum of traditional Udmurtian village life. You have a number of typical Udmurtian farms here with preserved interiors. I recommend to book a guide as much of the history and traditions of this people are unknown to Russians and other outsiders. The site is also popular with the locals for outings and wedding pictures. There is a great souvenir shop with reasonably priced Udmurtian handicraft.

The museum is mainly targetting school children, but is also nice for tourists who are travelling through the region. It has a nicely presented collection with in one wing the focus on the nature (animals and plants) in the region and in the other wing an introduction to the history of the Udmurt people. Highly recommended place and very friendly staff!

Monument to the Crocodile

Reviewed By Jane19G - Moscow, Russia

Every time coming back to Izhevsk I visit my favourite crocodile. This monument has an interesting story behind it, not known to the majority of citizens, which is why it is wrongly called Crocodile Gena in the name of a cartoon character who has no connection to the Izhevsk Crocodile whatsoever.
The sculpture has been designed by Asen Safiullin and created by Pavel Medvedev with the idea first to commemorate the green honorary caftans of Izhevsk factory workers, which earned them the nickname “Izhevsk crocodiles” in the pre-soviet period. The crocodile's peculiar hat reflects the indispensable element of their outfit. And secondly, it's been long rumoured that crocodiles regularly escaped into surrounding waters from the circus, menagerie, or emerging from some other unknown places, thus contributing to the local mythology. Some of the news on sensational appearance of a crocodile in the river Karlutka were even published.
For me this sculpture means not only connection to the history of my native city, but also freedom of creation and development of the city space. Love this crocodile!
