Volcan Cayambe

I guided a friend up this mountain as our first climb in Ecuador after Illiniza. We camped outside the Refugio and the same night left around 1 am for the summit. The route is straightforward though winding through crevasses and icefall. Anyone with experience shouldn't find it difficult. It's a moderate climb and the altitude isn't really that much by my standards. The views are absolutely stunning. The summit is rather flat and big. For anyone without experience I recommend hiring local guides and be well equipped with all ice equipment like ice ax, crampon, really warm jackets and rope etc. Happy climbing

Forget the tourist trap "equators" & trips offered to you in Quito, this is the true equator. It is a community run non-profit organisation that educates the public & researches archaeologically significant sites throughout Ecuador, for their importance with respect to the history of pre-Hispanic astrological knowledge.
Entrance includes an interesting presentation that informs you of how the globe should look.
We took our teens on way back from Otavalo to Quito and they loved it.

Visited the cookie factory is included in a day trip to Otavalo, I didn't know that this cookie is very popular. This little town Cayambe just before Otavalo is very known for its bizcochos, many locals from other towns and cities drove to Cayambe just for bizcochos. The cookies we have seen here are ready for sale. The dough of bizcochos is flattened and divided into stocks which are served a half dozen at a time in brown paper bags. I can't believe how many bizcochos they made per day, a lot, lot more as the guide said. The cookies are baked in a brick oven. A huge oven which can fit in more than hundreds of bizcochos at a time

I have straddled the equator in Indonesia and both my wife and I have straddled the prime meridian so she wanted to have her try at straddling Latitude 0.00. I had read about the other more popular location nearby but was not really interested in all the hoopla. This particular location is supposedly a more accurate location of the equator. If you care to see other things we did in Ecuador see our not for profit blog at http://havecarryonwilltravel.com. It is operated by a small group of enthusiasts that spend their time researching how different historical sites relate to one another and how the network relates to the universe. They concentrate on the movement of the sun and how the location of the different ruins track the days, months, seasons and years. Their theory on the orientation of the earth's axis being parallel to the suns is easily refutable but all in all the short lecture we got from one of the organization's members was interesting and worth the 20 minutes we spent listening.
The sundial is located 47 km from Quito and did cost us a $90 cab ride. We shared the ride with another couple so the cost was reasonable. I did see the rate sheet over the cabbies shoulder and the posted rate is $100 so I did not feel taken. The added benefit for us was we were able to see a bit of the country side around the city. The trip was about 4 hours in total.
If you are not interested in spending the day at the Mitad del Mondo attraction this place is a perfect alternative.

What a wonderful day! First of all, the scenery is jaw-dropping! The property is stunning and I regretted not spending the night there. So romantic! Finally, I've gone horse back riding numerous times but these horses were, without a doubt, the finest I've been on. It's obvious they are well cared for and well trained. Our guide was wonderful and quiet. He allowed us to observe the scenery. You will NOT regret this tour!
