Top 10 restaurants in Hamburg, Germany

August 23, 2017 Nicolette Lion

Second only to Berlin in size and population, the city of Hamburg is home to one of the biggest harbors in Europe. A stroll along its many waterways and canals illustrates why it has been called the "Venice of the North." Don't miss a trip to the local fish market (Fischmarkt), the Merchants District (marked by its imposing red-brick architecture), a fine dining experience along the river or a night out in the university quarter. And did we mention the Reeperbahn (red light district)? It's quite famous for its… red lights.

Restaurant Haerlin

The Haerlin Restaurant at the Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten (Four Seasons Hotel) is one of the leading gourmet restaurants in Germany and has picked up 1 Michel Star and 17 Gault Millau points. Head Chef Christoph Rüffer creates light dishes based on classic French cuisine, combined with Mediterranean influences. The interior is evocative of the classic era when the hotel was founded by the original owner Haerlin. The exquisite food is served in the palatial dining room with classical music playing in the background and a stunning view of the Inner Alster Lake. The restaurant is available for hire and can cater for up to 90 people. Friendly, courteous service round off the whole experience.

Indeed, heaven on earth exists. What a great evening, what a very pleasant atmosphere, high-level cuisine and impeccable service. Haerlin is the in-house 2* Michelin restaurant in the Fairmont Vierjahreszeiten hotel on the Alster lake in the center of Hamburg. Like the hotel, the restaurant is chic, stylish and exceptionally decorated. Staff is friendly, very knowledgeable and they know how to create a particularly pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. Formal, but relaxed indeed. I felt very much at ease.
I have chosen their 4-course menu including pairing wines. In addition to the 4 courses, they serve 3 amuses at the start of the dinner and another 2 at the end, just before and after dessert. Do not be worried if you can’t remember all the courses and amuses, Haerlin has a great system of small cards with each dish on it. The small cards are put to the table at each dish. This makes the dinner very enjoyable. The wines were great, in particular the one from Lebanon. The layout of the dishes was very nice as well were the flavors.
I have had a very, very pleasant evening and I can not imagine what could be improved. If you want to dine in Hamburg on a high level and in a very pleasant atmosphere, I can highly recommend Haerlin. Many thanks to Haerlin staff for a great dinner and the impeccable service.

A small Italian restaurant, localized in the trendy St. Georg district.
The owner cooks real Italien dishes - tasty without rigmarole. Not Italian gourmet food but authentic and made by good products. Had a nice thin sliced veal liver together with the best spinach since a long time.
Great home made Tiramisu. The Vitello tonnato tuna gravy was to heavy and dump. Could be more light and fresh.
Good wine selection, fair prices, friendly service.
Nice to sit outside. Cozy but a bit dark and cramped inside down in the basement restaurant.

La Mirabelle

I made the reservation by mail a week prior to arrival with great correspondance from the owner Pierre.
Food:
The food was GREAT. I had a 4 course and I would recommend the cheese for dessert as he has approx. 30 variants. Almost a Michellin star worthy.
Service:
The service was ok, not sublime. I liked that the owner was covering the wine and cheese selection which he did with a good sense of humor and the chit chats with him made the stay even better.
Decor:
The decor was dreadful, and one of the reasons for not giving 5 stars. They should absolutely do something about the interior e.g. the sofa at the end of the restaurant looks so tacky and like something from a cafe where you smoke waterpipes (no disrespect).
The other reason for not giving 5 stars is that when we arrived, there was a nasty smell from the toilets. It smelled partly of ordinary public toilet and partly of sewer. It kind of vanished during the stay.
All in all it was a great stay with really really great food. I would still come back but ask for a table close to the bar rather than close to the toilet.

I really enjoyed my dinner at Sagner's, and tried the northern German specialty labskaus. The restaurants was a short walk from my hotel, and also was totally local. Luckily they had English menus, and the hostess was quite helpful and could speak English. I also sipped on a tasty local beer. Well priced also.

The restaurant is very elegant and comfortable. The staff are extremely knowledgable, very professional and yet totally friendly and welcoming. The food is spectacular. You have little choice though. There are three menus (one vegetarian) with either 5, 6, 7 or 8 courses. Every course is a work of art and really beautifully presented and the flavours are very interesting but I couldn't help but feel that some of the authenticity of the food was lost in the huge amount of work that went into transforming every dish into a painting. With many of the dishes, whilst the flavours were lovely, I had no idea what I was eating.
Everything about the restaurant is done to perfection but my word, you pay for it. I cannot fault this restaurant in any way and I particularly want to commend the great staff but I can't say that it is really my taste as I prefer simpler, more authentic food at a tenth of the price.
I fully understand that Michelin stars are warded for precisely what this restaurant does and it fully deserves its two stars. But Michelin stars are not my criteria of a good restaurant.

I booked this restaurant online before coming to Hamburg and then totally forgot what time I had booked for. It didn't matter, they couldn't have been more accommodating when I turned up an hour early even though they were rammed busy and it was peak time on a Friday night. They managed to seat us half an hour early and recommended somewhere nearby to while away the half hour.
The food was really special - easily among the best steak restaurants I have ever eaten in, and this is no small claim. the service was superb - even telling me when I had probably ordered one too many sides....
Really very very highly recommended indeed - I cannot fault the food, the wine or the service, All round top quality.

Having read the reviews, I really wanted to try this place out. Hmmmm, mixed feelings. We had a mixed Brazilian Tapas plate & garlic prawns for a starter. Both were ‘nice’ but not outstanding. The Pichana was tasty but nothing special. The staff were very friendly.
