Tanja Grandits

We dined here last weekend for something special to celebrate - it was very expensive, (640 swiss francs for two people = 634 U.S. dollars), which included three glasses of wine each, so DID NOT include an expensive bottle of wine! Presentation deserves five stars, service was very good. No points for ambiance (rather sterile), prices are in the stratosphere, we find it sad that the citizens of Basel are supporting the restaurant with their tax dollars, since only a limited percentage of the population can pay this price for a meal.

Pizzeria La Pergola

Reviewed By M Z - Innsbruck, Austria

Our navigation guided us to this place as we ventured off the highway duuring a snow blizzard looking for a traditional pizzeria. We were not really welcomed by the staff but shown a table and promptly given the menu. Drinks were delivered fast, pizza took about 20 mins. and tasted OK. No real kick for the taste buds and advertised toppings were sparse. Second drinks order for a beer took 15 mins. to deliver by which time we had already finished our meal. Coffee tasted good. No real surprises, meal for two adults and two kids added up to CHF 80,- which is not too bad. Still would not come again.

I visited for lunch with a group of 15 hikers (booked in advance). We ate à la carte. I chose the business lunch which consisted of 1) an excellent creme of vegetable soup 2) one of the worst green salads I have ever been served - mushy, far-from-fresh leaves drowned in an unimaginative French dressing 3) a perfectly good but overdone fillet steak (I had ordered medium) saturated in an excessive quantity of garlic butter sauce accompanied by O.K. fries and - strangely - large slices of melon, pineapple and kiwi fruit. The beer was good, but the service slow, with only one waitress for perhaps 30 guests, most of whom had arrived at the same time. The ambience of the restaurant is pleasant, with its witchcraft theme continuing into the surrounding Gardens. Most of the menu consists of variations on the theme of grilled meat on skewers, including exotic meat like springbok and zebra which is hard to find elsewhere in the Basel area; perhaps I should have chosen that!

Zum Rebstock

Reviewed By C3P0 - Basel, Switzerland

Food is good - large portions of hearty family-style food. Well cooked and very traditionally Swiss. The owner is very charming and the wait staff mostly so. They have Very cosy traditional surroundings and are family friendly with a kids menu and even have a change mat for babies upstairs.
The restaurant is popular so bookings are recommended. It is also possible to visit just for a drink, and if they are very busy, there is a central table that seems reserved for those just drinking.
Many staff speak English and those who don't get by well anyway. There is an outside terrasse in summer which is lovely. We visit Rebstock regularly.

Gasthof zur Sonne

Reviewed By Esty666 - Wickenburg, Arizona

During a recent total breakdown in traffic we had to switch our venue for a board meeting and hit upon the Sonne merely for accessibility and location on that chaotic day ... and hit paydirt. The traditional restaurant in its old building on the main street of the small town may not look like much from the outside, but the inside was a very pleasant surprise. Combining a modernized setting in an old building, the atmosphere is bright and welcoming and at the same time cosy and warm without any of the often found stark and jarring bleakness of ultramodern. The tables boast white linen tablecloths, and the napkins are linen as well. Crockery and cutlery are stylish and quality; andthe service is cheerful, friendly and faultless, atttentive and accommodating. The menu offers something for any taste and any palate however spoiled or finicky can find something to please it. The food was fresh and freshly prepared and very tasty, it was just all good; there's not a single thing I can fault.I can highly recommend this restaurant. The whole place is also very clean and well groomed. Prices are what prices are in Switzerland - i.e. high - wthout being excessive. The perfect place for any occasion - choose between the ordinary tap room main restaurant and the adjacent dining room.

Fancy a game of pool or snooker? Played at record pace? The Billard Center in Reinach is very popular with young people who come to the centre to play game after game. The dcor is garishly green. The food and drink area is set apart from the pool and snooker tables. If you like you can take a breather at the bar or the mini tables. The centre serves all kinds of snacks. There are two lunchtime menus and the staff are fast and friendly. After a bite to eat you can get on with your game!

My son went here with some of his classmates & recommended it to us after our favorite pizza place (Sam's) closed down in Rheingasse. The place is really off the beaten path, you would not find it unless you were looking for it. I think it is kept in business by the lunch/dinner business crowd for the businesses surrounding it. I think this is also why it is affordable by Swiss standards. Not cheap by American standards but very good hamburgers and a good beer selection. The atmosphere is also very un-Swiss (colorful and somewhat loud - alive with people talking openly and televisons on)... a nice break for those expats living in Switzerland who crave a little liveliness from time to time and a break from all the schnitzel, spatzel, cordon-blue and fondue.... Open on Friday nights and weekends as well.

It is always a pleasure to visit Zum Ochsen the food is always very good, the service is top class and the interior is very pleasant. Their meat is sourced from Jenzer a local butcher and delicatessen which is well known for its quality. This was our first time since Lucien Stalder is the new chef. The dishes combined interesting combinations of ingredients, were tasty and did not disappoint. One negative point however is that we were seated in a room with a rather noisy group which at times made it difficult for us to hear each other! Nevertheless it is highly recommended.

What a great surprise.  Gasthof Muhle is tucked away in Aesch near Basel.  It is a Michelin recommended restaurant for 2012 and well deserving of the recognition.  My wife, son and I went there for Mother's day.  We were greeted by friendly waiters in black and white uniform in a restaurant split by a remarkable wine display case and fresh flowers on every table.   As our Swiss German is horrible, we were served by the manager, Jean-Daniel Moix, who is fluent in Swiss-German, French, and English.  We learned that Mr. Moix spent eight years abroad as a chef, was a chef at this restaurant (evident by a painting of him in chef attire on the wall of the restaurant) and now is the restaurant manger for the last 3 years.   The food was the best meal I have had so far in Basel.  We start with a complementary taster of a wine/mushroom terrine with fresh cheese and potato salad.  My starter was a delicious mini puff pastry with fresh asparagus, garnished with pesto, alfelfa sprouts and parsley.  My main was outstanding...A duo of perfectly grilled beef in red wine sauce and veal in a morels mushroom sauce. It came with crispy dauphinois potatos and fresh assorted vegetables.  For dessert, we had homemade rhubarbs sorbet with fresh strawberries in a yummy sabayon cream sauce.  For digestifs, they role out a nice cart of whiskey, cognac, and port for selection.  For 3 courses it was only 58chf, very reasonable for Swiss standards.
All in all,no boring Swiss food here, just great dishes full of flavor and tasty delights.  It is a local treasure and a must visit for expat foreigners like myself who appreciate great tastes.

Restaurant Schloss Hof Dornach

Reviewed By Brigit B - Hua Hin, Thailand

Local friends treated me here to an unforgettable dinner. It was a lovely, warm late afternoon, perfect to be sitting outside on the big Terrace and enjoy the view. The food as well as the service, both were good. Prices are in the average range. This restaurant is outside the city, on the hillside with hicking trails to nearby historic ruins.
