We went to see the Christmas lights. OK for a small town display but since we were there during the weekdays nothing special was going on. Even the "craft village" was closed and the carillon has been off due to electrical problems for months. So the only thing to do was go visit the museum which has about a dozen dioramas depicting Foster's songs and I must say I was impressed with the attention to detail in them.

We bypassed the first unpaved entrance figuring there'd be a visitor center or something more at the next entrance 2.5 miles further. Right. That road started as hard-pack but quickly deteriorated into thick, soft sand. The road was not wide enough to turn around and it was flanked on both sides by deep water filled ditches. Thankfully we have some experience driving in soft sand, kept our speed up and even, and didn't meet anyone coming at us. It was scary! The sand pitched our car all over the place and had we met another car and had to slow down we would've become stuck, who knows if the side of the road was stable enough for cars to pass because of the sharp edges to the ditch. There's no way someone driving a camper or pulling a fifth-wheel could've gotten in there. Then we had to turn around and do it all over again when we left. Worse, the park had no visitor center though we did, gratefully, avail ourselves of the nice restroom there.

This is the second time I've used this outfitter to kayak on the Suwanee River. John and Tricia are wonderful! They're friendly, on time, concerned with their customers' safety and comfort, and go out of their way to be helpful.
One of the women in our group fell sick near the end of our second day on the river. When Tricia picked us up she said there was a gas station near by where we could get ice and cold drinks. She also drove us back to our BandB so we wouldn't have to walk at the end of the day. We were so tired her kindness was greatly appreciated.

On the grounds of the Stephen Foster State Park there is a Museum and a series of shops for local folk artists. The Museum has Stephen Foster Dioramas where each diorama is themed on one of Foster's songs, it was interesting and well done. There was Stephen Foster music playing all the time we were in the Museum.

Little Shoals Recreation Area is a great place for hiking or biking. There are a variety of trails and great options to mix it up. The Florida trail also runs through this area, along part of the Suwannee River. It's quiet, a nice representation of North Florida scenery and a mix of sun and shade. You can see deer, wild Turkey, armadillo, turtles, a variety of birds, including great blue heron or a bald eagle. My husband and I have visited 2 or 3 times a week for the last 18 months. It's always a pleasure.

Bike trail popular for its scenic river views.

The trail head parking lot is directly behind the Ag Station south of town. The trail is fast and easy and beautiful. The Suwannee Bicycle Association maintains the trail and does a great job of it. This trail is the second of the three called 'All Town', after Bridge to Bridge (behind the ballfields) and before Beast of Burden (across the street just past the tracks).
