Showa Kinen Park

Reviewed By Australiafrancophile - Australia

I visited on Sunday 19th of November.I arrived via Tachikawa station but as has been said before NishiTachikawa station is more convenient.
There are very few leaves left on the gingko trees.I have learnt that autumnal gingko trees are stinky.
It was dogs day and there were many , many dogs with their devoted owners enjoying the garden.
The highlights for me were the Japanese garden with nice autumn colored maples and the bonsai garden.Dont miss the fingered citron bonsai.Like a big lemon with 6+ "fingers"
There is also a small dahlia garden with dahlias flowering now.
-
We took the little train for 310 yen.It tends to go around the periphery for some of the route so not so scenic but saves the leg.As has been said this park is absolutely enormous but flat and no steps so wheelchair friendly.
Good play areas for children.
Bring food because, surprisingly, there isn't much available.

Tama Monorail

Reviewed By revbriangraham - Fallbrook, California

The Tama monorail runs right through Tachikowa at the JR station. I hopped on for an afternoon adventure just to see what could be seen
The ride was smooth, and at a speed where I could take in the countryside easily.
My trip took me a little over an hour to reach the end of the line. One of sites I saw was the zoo at one of the stops. I think tomorrow I will board the mono and visit the zoo rather than simply heading to the end of the line at Edo City. I will let you know what I find. The monorail as an actual form of transportation has come of age in Japan

Polar Science Museum

Reviewed By Graham H - Hobart, Australia

Japan has a proud history of polar exploration including the early explorations of Lt Nobu Shirase in Antarctic a hundred years ago. The museum is small but gives a good representation of Japan’s past history and current research activities. English literature and assistance are available. It’s definitely worth a visit if you are in Tachikawa area. The museum is on the south side of the National Institute of Polar Research building, about 400 metres from the western side of the Takamatsu Station on the Tamatoshi Monorail line (one station north of Tachikawa city centre).

Ganduo Tachikawa

Reviewed By Ted C - La Mesa, California

This is a better than average 7 story department store attached to the Tachikawa Station. Very limited food section, much better next door at Lumine, but the resturants on the 7th floor offer a good selection and a reasonable price point. The Chinese restaurant, I forget the name in the northwest corner is good but a bit expensive. The others are some good, some not so good.
Shopping is good if you are young and thin, not great for older, fatter Americans. Good selection of tenigui for souveniers (sp) on the 5th floor though, this is a branch of the original and most famous tenigui shop in Asakusa just south of Sensoji Temple.

Lalaport Tachikawa Tachihi

Reviewed By Prepcook - Fussa, Japan

This is a great mall to visit on a hot summer's day! The Fountain outside is overflowing with laughing, screaming, giggling toddlers whose Moms are keeping a watchful eye nearby. The inside is a cool, vast assemblage of some of the best shopping in the area for any budget.
A little less than a quarter of the retail space is devoted to food. Supermarket style, specialty store style, gourmet products, you name it. European wines and liquors are
available. There is a book store with a café and a few shelves of somewhat stale English language books. There is a large food court area as well as individual restaurant venues. The rest of the retail space is divided up as follows: the entire 3rd floor is devoted to children and babies. Anything from diapers to toys to strollers and educational items are here for families. Floors 1 and 2 are divided between women's clothing, shoes and accessories and home interior and kitchen items with a few men's stores. There is a camping/outdoor store and a luggage store. Some Western big name brand stores are represented here but most are Japanese.
Not many services to be found; maybe one nail salon, one massage place and one that does facials and make-up.
A caution to parents with small children; at one point during our visit there was a general announcement made to the effect that parents needed to control young children in order not to disrupt the experience of others.
Keep in mind that Asian sizes run both small and short and the largest shoe for a woman is in size 8.

Tachikawa Park

Reviewed By GordonAdelaide - Adelaide, Australia

The park is really set up for blossom time (late March till mid April) and we were there in early February when all the blossom trees were bare.
The park is big (163 hectares) and it was beautiful to walk around with Fountains, lakes, restaurants, bbq areas etc all around. It would be stunning in Spring/Summer when the little trains and boat rides would be operating.
There were still plenty of people in the park, its set up so each feature flows into the next but isn't visible to the others and there is the usual amazing Japanese attention to detail in everything from the tree pruning to the restroom availablity.

Is a great library in the center of Tachikawa. Do not plan to check anything out though unless you have a resident card. The people are nice and are more than willing to let you set and read anything you want or watch DVD on the free TV.

Azusamiten Shrine

Reviewed By 2ji3 - Tokyo, Japan
