Nickel Plate Trail

Reviewed By Brice H - Peru, United States

This trail is very well maintained. The Nickel Plate Rangers travel the trail on a regular basis reporting any hazards and supplying information when needed. The trail is paved from Rochester to the North end of Kokomo and has been used by many cross country groups. It is not unusual to see wildlife along the trail as much of it goes through farmland and small towns. There have been reports of coyote, dear, Turkey, fox, rabbit, squirrel and more. When crossing the Wabash in Peru during the early winter through late spring, it's not unusual to spot a bald eagle fishing along the river. There are no restroom facilities but if you plan ahead, there are a few small stores that are open in the towns between Rochester and Peru and between Peru and Kokomo. There are plenty of places to eat just off the trail in Peru and the Rochester trail head is about a mile from Wal-Mart. This is one of the best rails-to-trails that we have in the state.

Mississinewa Lake

This campground offers full hookup so while we didn't use their bathrooms or showers they did appear clean but could use some fresh paint to improve the appearance. Campsites are typical, close together and no real privacy. This area is great if you have a boat or want to enjoy the water but the hiking trails didn't really offer any type of views or anything of interest. We drove around and saw some pretty views of the lake and checked out the reservoir where a lot of people were having good luck fishing.

American Huey 369 Museum

Let me first say that the following comments are from the Co-Founder of American Huey 369, Alan Walker.

If you are anyone who lived in the Viet Nam Era, then you are already part of a history that should be remembered for all those, Veterans and Patriots alike that endured a time in history that shaped the future of our American landscape. Those who endured this time of war share a bond that many would not understand, or even appreciate. Not until some time later when those who fought and survived, along with those who supported them, started gathering to remember their fallen brothers and sisters, would the Healing begin that would guide these unsung heroes to proudly share their experiences.

I was just 16 when Viet Nam ended in the middle 70's. I never would have imagined that at 55 I would be so proud of not only what these Vets had done, but also the great losses they and their families have endured.

Those who choose to be part of any solution, choose so because they care! American Huey 369 is made up of countless members who choose to care and make a difference in the lives of those they touch through this wonderful organization and the many events 369 has participated in since its beginning.

2 beautifully restored, flying Hueys await those who are looking for the healing that only these type of aircraft and their volunteer Veteran and Patriot Crew Members provide. No words or pictures can help anyone who is not willing to help themselves. I invite you to take a chance at what might just CHANGE your life! Check us out at our website, americanhuey369.com , feel what others have experienced, then be a part of helping others find what you and your loved ones found. It's up to you, no one else! Thank You for your time, your service and welcome home! A. J. Walker

Roxy Movie Theater

The Roxy 5 was opened in 2012. Following the corporate closing of Peru's previous chain-owned theater, community leaders came together to found the Roxy 5. Awarded the Golden Shovel by the then mayor, Jim R. Walker, The Roxy Theater stood as a shining light among local business in tough economic times. Open now for 5+ years, the Roxy 5 always puts the customer & community first. The Roxy 5 is also available for group bookings, parties and events. Please contact us for more info. Doors open a half hour before the first show. Doors and concessions close a half hour after the start of the last show of the evening.

I didn't realize Peru had a movie theater until a few weeks ago. So I took my daughter down here to see SING while she was on break. This is easy to get to off of US24 and it is only a couple miles east of the US31 & US24 intersection.

The ticket sales and snack sales are all at the same counter, you pay for both at the same time. Which is nice but a bit cumbersome, because the lines can be backed up to the door pretty quickly. This was about the only thing I think could be improved on, they did end up opening a second register, then things smoothed out pretty quick. They have a decent website so you can check showings and times.

Snacks are all pretty standard, candy, popcorn, slushee, and pop. They have a shake and share lid for the popcorn which costs a little extra or you get it with certain combos, this was something new to me, but it was nice to have. They have a butter station where you can put your own butter on your popcorn. They only have popcorn salt, no cheese or ranch flavors.

The actual theatre has stadium seating and was clean. They didn't have the volume cranked way up like some theaters do. They even had some boosters seats for small children in the corner up at the top of the seating. All and all it's a nice movie theater.
