Haleakala National Park

Reviewed By SerendipityIndia - New Delhi, India

I have seen multiple pictures of Haleakala from the visits of my friends to this place and was super fascinated to visit. Although to see the sunrise, one has to make it to the top of the crater by 6 AM, which means getting up around 3-4 AM and making the long drive to the top of the crater. So it has to be planned with a lot of courage to get up early in the morning and for lethargic people like me, almost ruins half the day where I have to accommodate the pending sleep. But the views of seeing a sunrise above the clouds in totally worth it.

However, we could not make it there as recently the authorities have restricted the amount of cars that can go atop one day to control parking. And the tickets get sold out way in advance - so plan super ahead as Haleakala is one of the MOST popular activities in Maui and the passes sell out fast.

If you can bear to get up at 2am you should not miss the sunrise on the top of Haleakala. This company picks you up at your hotel and takes care of everything. Otherwise you need to apply for a permit in advance to go up yourself. After watching the sunrise, they take you down to where they provide you with a bicycle and helmet. It's an easy ride down the volcano, all downhill. At the bottom you go on 5 different ziplines, each gradually longer. You end with a picnic lunch. The whole thing was really fun and I highly recommend it.

My husband and I did the breakfast tour somewhat on a whim, but I'm so glad we decided to give it a try. The tour was lovely and very interesting, and the breakfast and coffee were absolutely delicious. We probably would have gone back for the lunch tour, but they were unfortunately all booked up for the remainder of our trip. It's definitely on our to do list for next time though. This is a great way to see a different side of Maui and get some yummy food and coffee at the same time.

Pukalani Country Club

Set in the gentle hillsides of "Up-Country" Maui, Pukalani Country Club overlooks the Pacific Ocean and offers breath-taking panoranic views of the Valley Isle of Maui. The Pukalani Country Club is nestled at the 1,100 foot elevation level of world famous Mount Haleakala, an extinct volcano whose name in Hawaiian means "House of the Rising Sun" and is appropriately reflected as the golf course's logo. Pukalani's 18 holes were designed by golf course architect Bob Baldock who designed more than 69 public and private golf courses throughout the United States. The Pukalani Country Club's greenery covers nearly 160 acres. Built in 1980, the course is 6,962 yards long from the championship tees, plays to a par 72, and features 19 greens in its 18-hole layout! On hole #3, golfers may choose a tough iron shot across a ravine and into the wind for one green, or a challenging chip shot straight down to a well-trapped green several hundred feet below into the ravine. No other golf course in Hawaii can compare or offer you this unique setting and challenge of our hole #3. "Pukalani" which in Hawaiian means "Entrance to Heaven" certainly describes Pukalani Country Club!

On a sunny Monday we went to play golf here. We first drove to Jimmy’s (10 min drive) north of our Kaanapali Maui Ocean Club hotel. A set of 12 Taylormade or Adams clubs with bags rented for $30/day. The course is about an hour drive from hotel. It’s on higher ground with a beautiful view of surrounding area. The carts have no GPS. May be that’s why green fee was a decent $57. The club house is very modest and small. There is food and beverage service right in the next building. We bought spam musibi and beer. Many holes do not have concrete cart paths, just natural dirt. Many of the front nine holes were lined on each side with impressive tall local trees highlighting the beautiful course and well kept greens. The holes were straightforward, flat and a joy to play. The third hole being under repair required a shot across a 150 yard gully to the green. Overall it was enjoyable. We took advantage of the golf shoes sales.

Sliding Sands Trail

Get your logistics ready and hop on the trail to Mars. Get your backpack filled with lots of water, change of close, snacks and of course your camera(s). The trail begging right from the parking lot and, just steps away, you will see the sign. The trail is paved, and if its raining it can get tricky. When I visit I didn’t experience any rain, I was lucky so the hike was not that hard. This one is moderate/hard, depends how far you want to go. The views are AMAZING, like you are on another planet, seriously. There are not too many people on it and occasionally you will see the park rangers with horses on the trail, remember not to upset the horses, there are also signs for that. Enjoy the trail and the views, I know that you will, absorb this beauty that you will never find anywhere else, spend some time, don’t rush. This is A MUST when you are visiting Maui. Don’t forget that if you pay the $25 pass here, you can use it for the other side of the national park if you decide to do the Road to Hana and hike the trails there (Pipiwai Trail).

Spent a relaxing afternoon here tasting different wines and making new friends.
We also discovered what is now my favourite drink on the islands, Pog Mimosa (POG is a tropical fruit mix of passionfruit orange and guava) which combines perfectly with their homegrown sparkling wine to create this unique drink.
Well worth the drive out if you enjoy wine.
