Nakagusuku Castle Ruins

Nakagusuku Castle is visible evidence of the Ryukyu kingdom and is a perfect reflection of that period of time in Okinawa’s history. The natural rocks and the land surrounding the castle are in perfect harmony with the curving walls, this amazing feat allows us to appreciate the masonry skills of this ancient time.

This place has breathtaking views and a great atmosphere. It's a bit off the beaten path so accessing it by public transportation is a bit tricky and time-consuming but it's well worth it.
What made this visit absolutely memorable was the visit to the hotel ruins just next to the castle. It says it's forbidden to access the hotel but go for it! it's not like in the west where these places are full of junkies and rubbish, here you'll have the feeling of being in a ghost-town or a haunted house.

We enjoyed wandering and the Christmas lights in the Botanical Gardens. However, because it was dark, we did not really get to experience the Gardens. The lights were fun, and there were food trucks and snack options as well. At 7:30 pm there were fireworks as well. A fun way to spend Christmas evening.

Aeon Mall Okinawa Rycom

Reviewed By jeffayn - Malaysia

I really do not know why they built such a big mall in Okinawa, but thanks to them I have destination to go to during the evening as I am not a fan of early bed time.
Also thanks to my wife 'pestering' me to rent a car while in Okinawa, I am able to visit this Rycom and leave till it closing time.
This mall is huge, new and definitely you need hours to walk around just windows shopping. The food court is big and vast selection of food, decent pricing too.
This mall got a full size supermarket , I get my refill of snacks, refreshment, candy, band aid and others... The reason why I am so happy in here is because in Okinawa is very different from Tokyo, Osaka or other main city in Japan where you see dozens of convenience store & pharmacy on one city block.
Of course the lady can shop here for hours....hahaa...
Plus the fact I am staying at one of the secluded resort hotel, therefore I am feel relieve where all the convenience I can get under one roof
Don't worry about the car park , this mall car park is enormous & FREE ...lol

Sunset Beach

Reviewed By JTCGreen - Seattle, Washington

It's a family oriented small beach nestled between the Vessel Hotel and Monpa. It's also accessible from the American Village. There's a lifeguard on watch and the swimming area is cordoned by a net to keep Jellyfish out . There also a concrete theatre style Seating area facing the sea and some tents for barbecues/party. Lots of vending machines around for hydration including alcoholic beverages. Though we never went for a swim, we did walk a lot especially in the afternoon when the sun is almost down. Sunsets are amazing and the Seawalk gets you to Araha beach on the South Side and to The Hilton the North Side. We truly enjoyed our time there. The Japanese in the Island are truly friendly and engaging! There was not a single local on our walks in this park that didn't Nod nor smile nor say Konnichiwa to us. We are grateful for the experience .

Okinawa Zoo & Museum

Reviewed By Patrick S - Panama City, Panama, Panama

We had the opportunity to visit the zoo the 3rd week of July. Very hot weather for the amount of walking you will do. The zoo is very well laid out, however, there is really not a lot to see. The facilities are aged, and the few animals there are are not very exciting. It may of been the time of day we went, but most of the animals were either asleep or inside their habitats and could not be seen.
I would recommend the zoo during the spring time as the weather would permit a more leisurely stroll on the grounds.
The “petting zoo” leaves a lot to be desired, with a few turtles and chicks (this is about all you can pet). They had a crazy looking goat on a leash, and a few Guinea pigs with a sign saying “do not touch”...!!! it’s a “petting zoo”.
The area is well maintained and is well worth the trip but NOT in the summer time.
We did not get a chance to eat at the restaurant there, but there was a place on site.
If you visit via taxi, ask the staff to call you a cab, as there are NONE hanging around outside.

Depot Island

Reviewed By wiredfrog - Timaru

If you don't mind something garish and tacky, then, Depot Island, aka American Village might be your place. It's very close to the American Navy area, and thus, you get to see more Westerners roaming around the area. There are heaps of bars (predictably so), restaurants, retail shops dotted around the area, and also, the AEON outlet, where you get to enjoy tax free exemption once you spend over 5,000 Yen (8% discount). Architecture there varies and some of them have got the Gaudi influence architectural, and some seemed to copy straight out from Luis Barragan or Ricard Leggoretta's notebook. There's the quintessential ferris wheel to complete the picture. There's a good enough beach nearby, and the place is choked with tourists scrambling for the best spot to take their selfies during sunset.

Michi-no-Eki Kadena

Come up to the roof Terrace (shaded) of this road station for excellent views of the action at Kadena Air Base. When we were there we saw an E-5 Sentry (based on the 707 or KC-135) and a C-17, as well as some other aircraft on the ramp.
There's a cafe up here or you can go to the nearby Family Mart and bring a snack and cold drink. Benches here, too. Binoculars and a telephoto lens are helpful but not necessary to enjoy.
