The 10 Best Things to Do in Bordighera, Italy

July 25, 2017 Phylicia Berquist

Known as the City of Palms, scenic seaside Bordighera is the proud supplier of fronds to the Vatican every Palm Sunday. Just a few miles from the borders of both Monaco and France, floral Bordighera has been a favorite resort destination for British visitors since the 19th century, when Queen Victoria herself was a guest. The town has many lovely gardens (like Pallanca and Winter), an archaeological museum (the Bicknell) and a lovely old town, but most come for the beach and seafront promenade.

Beautiful little chapel tucked away at the head of the promontory, a place of relaxation and reflection as well as to admire the views. Note the chapel opening times are restricted. Don't forget to read about the life of Saint Ampelio.

Like 'Alta' already indicates, you have to climb uphill to reach the old and higer part of Bordighera.
It's my favorite part of town with narrow streets and little squares.
The central square is the Piazza del Popolo with the lovely Maria Maddelena church.
Remarkable is the bell tower with underpassage, completely seperated from the church itself.

Quite a beautiful stretch of beach here, and the day we went the water was five shades of turquoise, teal and blue. Just gorgeous! Views all the way to Monaco! There are several areas here to enjoy; A wide Promenade, a designated bike path (that starts in Camporosso), parking, a playground for kids, several restaurants, and on Thursdays a big flea market (the same market that moves to Ventimiglia on Fridays). The train station is easily accessible.

Well worth popping in here for an hour's guided tour while exploring this charming town. Fronted by massive ficus trees, this fascinating building and collection is a memorial to the life and work of Clarence Bicknell, 19 century British botanist and archaeologist, one of the celebrated residents of the town in its heyday.

Like many of Bordighera's attractiin this venue is tucked away and you will need some good directions. I walked from Bordighera alta and it was a preparation for the surprise in store. The villa has fine examples of XIX and XX century art and a uniquely untouched artist studio plus several thousand artefacts. The celebrated Matisse painted from the grounds and the owner will show you the exact location, together with copies of the famous paintings illustrating the views then and now A testament to the owner's love of art and preservation, this gem of a place deserves a detour. Note that you must book in advance. Tickets are priced at 7euros per person (September 2015)

Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena

Reviewed By Paul B - Maastricht, The Netherlands

While the Santa Maria Maddalena church is dominating the cosy Piazza del Popolo, it's separeted bell tower is the landmark of Bordighera Alta.
The church itself was built in the beginning of the 17th century and is really a 'must see' in the upper part of town.
The interior looks really wonderful with painted stuccos and gold bladed decorations.
Remarkable is the separated bell tower, which was built in the middle ages as a sight tower and was later converted into a bell tower,
