Daikanbo

Daikanbo is located on the northern rim of the crater. You can see the breathtaking view from this look out. To go there take a bus named Yamabikogo from JR Kumamoto station and get off at JR Aso station. From Aso station there are two tour buses going to Daikanbo at 10:15 and 14:00. The operation of these tour buses is until January 31,2017.

Aim to go there during sunset
. The view of the Mountains against the changing light colours made good photo shots. With mt aso closed, this may well be the nearest you can get to it. Drive up is rather windy but the view is worth it.

Aso shrine

It's about 20 minutes of walk from the train station. The shrine is not big. However I was told that this is the headquarter of more than 50 Aso Shrines throughout Japan.
Inside the shrine, there are an ancient tree, a wishing stone, and a few stands where people do lucky draws.

Kusasenri

Reviewed By Jay P

Right now there's a 2 km exclusion zone around the volcano and many of the walks are off limits. Still you can get reasonably close and the crater lets off enticing puffs of smoke. The car park costs 410 yen.

Michi no Eki Aso

You can find here an information center (but if you read the pages of this blog you already knew it) where you can ask informations about various topics like where to find the restaurant you want or what places to visit. You can also ask us if you want to know about the crater situation. But you will also find here a large number of local specialties for sale : meat, milk, vegetables and so on. Of course everything is coming from Aso area !

Cuddly Dominion

The site is a child's animal theme park, playing with pets. But it is also the site of an amazing helicopter trip over the Mt Aso area. To get to the helicopter you have to pay to get into the Park; just treat this as part of the cost of the ride. (But check that the helicopter is working). The rides are good and the cost is reasonable.

Aso Geopark

Reviewed By Tweetcoz - Melbourne, Australia

We drove to the geopark only to find out the roads and ropeway were closed due to the recent eruption. Roadworks and repairs for fallen away roads.
The volcano was puffing away and we could see the grey ashen grounds surrounding the area. We walked up along the cow pasture but no where close enough. The car park at the volcano museum was free as nothing was open, not even the museum. A little disppointed nonetheless half a days' outing.
The drive along the countryside was nice so it wasn't all wasted.

Aso Milk Road

Reviewed By Wakatipu0101 - Singapore, Singapore

hallenge you to find a more scenic drive in Kumamoto Prefecture than the Milk Road, which traces the edge of the old Aso Caldera. From its heights - and the eventual Daikanbo lookout - drivers are treated to wide-reaching views of the currently smoking Mt Aso as well as the stunning peaks of the Kuju Range over in Oita Prefecture. While the road sometimes closes in winter due to icy conditions (the access will be blocked by gates), the colder months also promise clearer skies, snow-capped hills and hot Springs just down the road at Kurokawa Onsen.

Aso Mizuki Meguri

Reviewed By Katy S - Toronto, Canada

Right next to the major Aso Shrine, there is a street with several shops, restaurants, and other small establishments which are nice to wander around and look into if you have a bit of time. What makes this area unique, though, are all the natural Springs, some bubbling and others with Fountains, wheels, bamboo pipes, etc. - there's practically one at the front of every shop! It was like a game trying to find all of them and point them out first. Many have cups/ladles set next to them - so feel free to try some truly natural spring water!

Aso Station

Reviewed By Kip F - Sacramento, California

we spent some time there upon arrival in Aso, then to take the bus to the Geopark, and also on a rainy day getting info from the tourist staff. There is also a farmer's market, tourist office and food cart over across the way that seems connected to the station. A good place to get info, food and figure out what to do in the area.
