Sunrise Theater

Reviewed By Sandy H - Southern Pines, North Carolina

I've been to the Sunrise a few times. It is a clean and comfortable old time theater. By that I mean like we went to when we were kids. None of the fancy reclining seats and multiple shows. There is one screen. They have things that other theaters don't play. Some things are current but others are the older films. The have a small concession stand and tickets are always $8.00. I love going there and would recommend it.

The college does a great job maintaining and improving this lovely place in the Sandhills. You can also walk from here to the Reservoir Park. I nice loop of both is around five miles.

Jims, Gems and Gold

Reviewed By Dez P - Smyrna, Georgia

Over the last year, my sister has become something of a rockhound. A co-worker told her about Jim's, so we decided to go check it out. Upon entering, a kindly gentleman behind the counter got up to greet us. He started us off with a magic trick using one of the specimens for sale, and then gave each of us a beautiful, polished stone to keep. We headed outside and purchased our buckets--a small bucket is $15.00 with a larger bucket being $25 and still larger buckets going up to about $100. Between the three of us, we purchased a small and a medium, and each bucket came full of semi-precious stones, the majority of which were good sized stones. We found pieces of a geode, deeply colored amethysts, and all sorts of interesting rocks we hadn't collected on any of our other sluicing excursions. The kindly lady helping us told us that this shipment of ore had come from Madagascar, so for those who like non-native rocks and minerals, this could be just the place for you. If you're a North Carolina purist, come anyway--you can always give you non-native minerals to someone else. :) Overall, the staff was very friendly, and very helpful. They'll tell you all about your finds, and if you're into the healing power of stones, there's a lady who's very knowledgeable about that, too. She indicated that there is a cabochon machine on-site, though I didn't inquire about costs and turn-around times for jewelry making. So what if rocks aren't your thing? Not to worry--Jim's offers gold panning, too!

Jim's is a clean and tidy location with two small troughs, though only one was running when we arrived. I'd recommend wearing comfortable clothes, possibly bringing rubber gloves to keep your hands clean and dry, and maybe a towel in case you splash yourself or if you'd just like to keep your bottom dust-free while seated at the trough. The troughs are covered to provide you some shade, and a sign outside of the shop indicated that they have soda and water for sale. In short, if you're passing through the Aberdeen area, and you'd like to try your hand and sluicing or panning, stop at Jim's! You won't be disappointed. :)

Southern Pines Brewing Company

Reviewed By Susan M - Surfside Beach, South Carolina

We used to live in this area and were pleasantly surprised to find craft breweries there on our recent return visit. Southern Pines brewing makes some excellent beer! They are a veteran owned business as well. We especially liked the Scottish Export. If you enjoy craft beer, SP brewing is a must.
