Pleasant, well priced lunch at 12 euros for 3 courses. Choice of starter, main and dessert. No course brilliant but everything nicely cooked, straightforward, French cooking. Won't get a michelin star but you won't go hungry. Frequented by french workmen at lunchtime and they are never wrong!

While visiting the medieval town of Provins we had a very memorable lunch at St. Jean, a little café with “Croustillant de Homard” lobster and scallops for me and sweetbreads for Carol, preceded by a delicious seafood terrine. The atmosphere felt thoroughly French, and the food was fantastic.

As others have written here, the Hostellerie de la Croix d'Or is an ancient monument having been in business in one form or another for centuries. The food and service, however, are completely up to date. While not a temple of haute cuisine, they produce a solid, tasty and well-prepared meal served with efficiency and friendliness. Well worth a stop if you are visiting Provins!

A great place to have an inexpensive and tasty lunch in the historic town of Provins, France.

Great choice for families, service was friendly, patient and welcoming. The crepes were fantastic, traditional, freshly crafted. (my kids loved the homemade chocolate) The location is perfect, plus they were open late which allowed us to walk the streets under a full moon. Great value as well! We drove over from Disney for dinner, which was a great contrast for the day, kids really enjoyed visiting the town. The owner is very kind and generous.

Easy to find in the centre of Provins. We were one of three other occupied tables so there wasn't much in the way of atmosphere. Straightforward menu reasonable food but the presentation was a bit basic A sort of chips with everything sort of place One tomato as the photo suggests
Service was friendly and efficient

Stopped here for coffee and had hoped, a cake. Greeted in a friendly manner and were persuaded to have tirimasu as no cakes available. Rather a rip off; both coffee and tirimasu served in egg cup size cup/glass and were charged 5:95€ per person....not good value and not at all special.
A pleasant enough place to sit outside, dark inside and "odd"toilet location!
Would not particularly recommend, although it was ok.

In a town overrun with mediocre tourist restaurants, this stands out as a genuine, honest bistro which is thankfully open on Sunday and Monday nights. Close to, but out of the touristy old city. One of the rooms however has too much lighting.....dimmer switch would be helpful for atmosphere.

We went to Provins for a day on my husband's birthday! I had bought groupon coupons for two for this lunch.
It was sooo great, much in keeping with the medieval tone of the entire town! They set the mood really nice, what with costumes, and story telling, and fire works and the meal presentation. I am not a fan of french food, but this one tasted better with the ambience. :D
Do visit, to be transported to another era!

Les Bistrophiles

Reviewed By Yachtjudge - Lymington, Hampshire,England

We were in Provins last year, needed a quick meal and had one course at Bistrophiles.
We returned to Provins this year with a bit more time available and reserved a table for Sunday lunch. Tricky because with the weekend "medieval christmas market and fair" its one of the busiest weekends of the year in Proving. We were worried about the reservation at first because I don't think that our email got through. But then we phoned on Friday evening and left a message, which was returned within two hours confirming a lunch reservation. My bad French and they hadn't got my name, but my mobile phone number was faithfully recorded in the list of bookings and that and when I played the voicemail confirming the reservation there were big smiles.
The restaurant was indeed busy but service was excellent. An amuse bouche appeared soon after we arrived and gradually the meal took shaped. The order was taken for the 25 Euro menu du jour. That was starter, main, cheese and dessert.
Everything we had was just great. My wife had a salade gourmande starter, I had a cassollette of escargots and mushrooms. Fresh bread rolls came for dunking and plate wiping and when we ran out of bread more came without asking. We had ordered a half bottle of the house red sancerre - excellent and good value at 16 euros. They had run out of half bottles but were giving people either a bottle and telling them to drink half, or the leftover half of a full bottle. We had a carafe of water - and that was kept topped up too without asking.
We had both gone for a steak main course - it was fillet, tender, cooked exactly as ordered and served with (I think) mashed swede and a delicious sauce. More dunking and plate wiping.
The cheese was a local Brie, perfectly ripe and then there was a choice of little choir pastries or Baba au Rhum.
This was not the total haute cuisine but it was extremely good French Brasserie/Bistro cooking.
We couldn't fault the food or the service.
The ambiance was great too. Full of families, mostly local or so it seemed. On the table next to us was a friendly French retired couple who lived near Provins and came regularly to Bistrophiles.
An excellent lunch.

The food is excellent and the environment is very cozy. The owner is very attentions and kind. I had to wait for a table and he had offered a glass of wine while waiting. Small things that make the difference. Congratulations!
