Cafe Urartu

Reviewed By William R - Washington DC, District of Columbia

I had an excellent dinner at Urartu during my stay in Petropavlovsk. The restaurant is a bit out of the way (not in the beautiful downtown part), but down International Blvd. towards the river in an old Soviet building, but with a "can't miss" front. The food was very good and the service was excellent. They had a pianist/dj on site (normally, that's not something I enjoy as it can be very loud), but this guy could really play the piano very well and he kept the recorded music at a low level. The only thing that I found less appealing was the draft beer selection. The dark beer was good (I normally don't like dark beer), but the lager was undrinkable. Still, a great night out!

Kafe Samovar

Reviewed By Chris D - Leiden, The Netherlands

A lively restaurant which doesn't look particularly inviting from the outside, but inside it had a great atmosphere and large parties. The Zalestsky Gus beer is good, the salads were very good, particularly notable were the quality of the croutons in the Caesar salad. The steak was tasty, but you did need the steak knife as they don't seem to do medium or rarer here in Kazakhstan. The roasted vegetables with the steak were perfectly cooked. It was lively so if you want a quiet place to talk, then a night earlier in the week may be better.

Chernaya Koshka

Reviewed By Tereshkevich - Astana, Kazakhstan

Restaurant-Club Moulin Rouge

Reviewed By CharlesYangon - Petropavlovsk, Kazakhstan

A colleague was bored and asked if I would accompany him to the Moulin Rouge so he could smoke the Shisha lamp. There's not a lot to do in Petropavl other than Constitution Street (a walking street), so I went with him. It was a nice club. The staff were friendly, the place semi-dark. Mostly local couples and large groups were there. If you ever want to see a truly integrated society, it's Petropavl (Russian and Asian). A small jazz ensemble played for a while so people could visit. Then, they broke out the "live" music for dancing. If you ever happen to be this far off the beaten path, check out Moulin Rouge. It's a fun evening!

Tsentr Plova

Uzbek cuisine is influenced by local agriculture, as in most nations. There is a great deal of grain farming in Uzbekistan, so breads and noodles are of importance, and Uzbek cuisine has been characterized as "noodle-rich".[1] Mutton is a popular variety of meat due to the abundance of sheep in the country and it is a part of various Uzbek dishes.

Yummy Uzbek food and delightful staff. We had amazing plov, which seems to be their speciality. They have good tea and I am a sucker for manti… One of the best restaurants in Petropavl!

Pizzoli

Reviewed By CharlesYangon - Petropavlovsk, Kazakhstan

Pizzoli is upstairs from the Zum Grocery Store on Constitution Street. Upon entering, you find a modern well-decorated environment. The staff is friendly and shy. Ask them for help and they will. They have a wonderful buffet, a real pizza oven and a Russian itamae. Yes, that's right. A real itamae who makes Japanese sushi and sashimi. It's pretty good and I spent 3 years in Japan eating delicious Kyoto sushi. I vouch for it. After having 2 slices of cheesy pizza and 2 rolls of sushi, I enjoy an after dinner expresso. Yes, they have real coffee makers complete with the pipes. They also have coolers with imported "beverages" if you wish. Their superb cuisine is a fusion of European and Japanese. This is my absolute favorite haunt in Petropavl. As the locals say, "Bon appetit!" Yeah, it's French but the locals say it anyway!
