Fowey Food Guide: 10 Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Fowey

July 17, 2017 Etsuko Causey

Fowey (/ˈfɔɪ/ ( listen) FOY; Cornish: Fowydh, meaning 'Beech Trees') is a small town, civil parish and cargo port at the mouth of the River Fowey in south Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The town has been in existence since before 1300; the estuary of the River Fowey forms a natural harbour which enabled the town to become an important trading centre. Privateers also made use of the sheltered harbourage. The Lostwithiel and Fowey Railway brought China clay here for export.

The Old Quay House - Restaurant

A Relaxed Waterfront Restaurant. The bright restaurant leads out onto a spacious Terrace where on a sunny day you can enjoy afternoon tea (the Cornish way of course, jam first!), A pre-dinner glass of fizz, or a long and lazy lunch. It's a great spot to watch life on the estuary unfold, from boats of all shapes and sizes to the local wildlife which includes resident swans and the occasional dolphin.Fowey River oysters, local scallops, West Country meat and Cornish cheeses... Hungry yet? 'Q' restaurant at The Old Quay House offers excellent dining in a relaxed, unstuffy setting. Forget unsmiling waiters, small portions and whispered conversations, dining here is all about fun and enjoyment - quality local and season produce features heavily on head chef Ben Bass'menu of creative, contemporary dishes. Our wine list, hand-picked by Britain's youngest Master of Wine, is pretty good too...

Called in here on a Monday evening without a reservation at 6pm and within a few minutes the place was full and prospective diners had to be asked to come back later.
The welcome and service was very friendly. The restaurant has a very pleasant and lively atmosphere.
The food was very good in quite large portions. The prawn cocktail and bouillabaisse the mussels were excellent.

Fowey Hotel Restaurant

The Fowey's restaurant has retained coveted 2 AA Rosette recognition for exceptional food since 1997 and an extensive wine list compliments the menu. Our dinner menu offers a choice of dishes that make use of the best Cornish and regional produce seasonally available. The variety of dishes are skilfully prepared by a very experienced brigade and led by Master Chef Mark Griffiths. The deep, rich colours and ornate features in The Fowey’s restaurant are redolent of the grand days when hotels were busy, social hubs and dining out was an occasion. Such surroundings provide an atmospheric soupcon of past times, which combined with delicious food, makes dining here a totally pleasurable experience. The hotel will gladly cater for special dietary requirements and appreciates advance notice in this respect. For those wishing to dine more informally, a comprehensive Bar menu is from midday until 9pm.

We are regular visitors to the hotel and jumped at the chance of another mini break including a gourmet taster dinner around the time of our wedding anniversary - someone told me the 44th is designated the gourmet anniversary, who knew? We absolutely love this hotel and the chef, who has been there for some fifteen years, is tireless in his creativity. The food just get better and better, ever more varied and sophisticated, always beautifully balanced and completely delicious. This special menu was lovely and included a Guinea fowl consomme (with dumpling), a whimsical egg (you had to be there), a fish stew, all local, a triumphant selection of different cuts of lamb cooked, and seasoned, to perfection and beyond, a chocolate dessert of real beauty in many forms, and all interspersed with a gin granita, tasteful array of cheese, petits fours... they even gave us a complimentary glass of something fizzy just for turning up! Everything was delivered at a suitable time gap and we weren't hurried along even though we chose to eat late. Have been to several taster type evenings elsewhere, including Raymond Blanc's Manoir, but this was the most memorable as well as the best value. Must not forget to mention the always delightful friendly staff and cosy homely atmosphere... yes of course we will be back.

The Globe

Originally a Posting House where people could 'hire' horses and get 'victuals', The Globe has been in Fowey for around 400 years. It has had many guises over the years but has always been a place of hospitality. Since taking over the building in March this year, it has been our philosophy to produce fantastic food using the very best ingredients Cornwall has to offer along with the warmest Cornish hospitality. Our Head Chef, Glynn Wellington, is Fowey born and bred, and proud to be Cornish and utilise the wonderful produce on our doorsteps. You may see him collecting the bread from Quay Bakery, just 50 yards away from the restaurant, or picking wild garlic in the fields around Fowey. Our meat comes from Kittows of Kilhallon just 3 miles away, and our mussels from beds about a mile away by sea. Our coffee is hand roasted here in Cornwall and our beers are all brewed in St Austell. Even our bubbly is Cornish from the award winning Camel Valley, near Bodmin. Over the coming months we will be restoring the letting rooms upstairs to their former glory and then be able to offer the finest Cornish food, drink and hospitality, right here in the heart of Fowey.

Really great food, lovely veggie Sunday lunch too. Nut roast a little dry but full of flavour. Excellent range of fresh vegetables and the beef was also good. Friendly waiting staff and reasonably priced. Recommend, plus they are open when all the other pubs stop serving in the afternoon.

Stopped late afternoon for an early dinner. Being mid March it was very quiet unlike our previous visit
Soft shell crab starter was gorgeous, prawns in garlic were also nice but larger prawns would be better than the small ones they use. We both had pizzas for our main and they were excellent with extremely generous toppings on both. A side of very nice fries topped off our meal
Location on the beach is fantastic and we would definitely return if in the area again

Having been badly disappointed by the service (or lack of) at another establishment in Fowey whilst looking for a traditional Cornish Cream Tea we stumbled across the Lifebouy Cafe and were immediately attracted by it's unique quirkiness. The cream tea was amazing with freshly cooked scones and plenty of cream and jam, all served on China that reminded me of tea at my Nan's 45 years ago. The weather outside was yuk but inside the sun was shining brightly. Thank you

The Dwelling House

The best Tearooms in Fowey. Ask Nigella Lawson she goes there.

After Reading the reviews we decided to try the Dwelling House, for lunch. There was a queue to be seated but we didn’t wait long. Had a selection of toasted sandwiches and shared 2 cream tea between 4 of us. Food was extremely good, couldn’t fault it. No rush, and pleasant service. One thing to be aware of is they only take cash as a payment. Would recommend a visit.
