Sticky Walnut

Had lunch here recently and it was very good. Three glasses of prosecco to start with; broccoli soup with lemon oil, shallot and yoghurt with toasted foccacia; crispy pig’s Head terrine with salt-baked turnip and miso; roast beetroot with ricotta and caramelised walnut; steamed cod with warm potato salad, pancetta and dill butter; charred leeks with butter beans, green sauce nd chestnut mushrooms and fried hen’s egg. Puds were coconut rice with poached pineapple and sugared hazel nuts; donut with Tonja bean ice cream and chocolate sauce. One small Chardonnay, one large Monastrell and one Americano brought the bill to £91.50 for three - all-round excellent.

So I booked here as a treat for my better half’s birthday. I booked online which was easy to do. We arrived early but that wasn’t an issue and we was seated straight away.
I was offered still or sparkling water for the table. Now I have been offered this in higher end bistro restaurants before and never had to pay, but this one ended up on the bill but that was my fault for not checking. The thing that made me laugh was when I said I’d had enough the waitress filled the glasses of the table next to me out of the bottle I was charged for. I found this amusing.
Onto the food, whilst we waited the waitress bought us a small loaf shaped bread with some butter in a bone, like bone marrow. Very nice.
I ordered the French onion soup which was really nice, like proper nice. My better half orders a blue cheese soufflé. Now I assumed a soufflé to be these things that rise in the oven and you dip your spoon through the middle into this light n fluffy thing. What came on the plate was something that resembled a dark, breadcrumbed small cake. Even the lady on the next table said it looked burnt and didn’t resemble a soufflé. Well it wasn’t burnt and it tasted lovely but I wouldn’t call it a soufflé.
For our mains we ordered the fillet steak. We asked what it came with and was told a mushroom and grilled tomato. So we ordered chips, haggis fritters and carrots to go with it. Steaks were cooked perfectly, the fritters were nice, carrots were nice and so were the chips. Everything was nice. The female staff were lovely and really friendly, didn’t talk to any male staff they seemed too busy. I am in a bit of a quandary about upstairs at the grill. I really don’t know what was wrong, if anything. This is definitely a higher end restaurant with the food and staff to go with it. I just felt underwhelmed but I can’t explain why. Maybe it’s just me. But it’s still not a soufflé.

We didn’t book but they managed to fit us in, and the restaurants ground floor was just about full of happy looking customers. We opted for a set menu and right from the delicious plate of starters, we were served good hot and very tasty dishes, which tasted different for each other, and if you know what I mean, the dishes didn’t blend into each other but were each a dish in their own right. The staff were excellent and attentive and made our evening that much more enjoyable.
The parking outside the restaurant was an extra bonus, and enabled us to travel across town.

Enjoying & sharing great food, drink & conversation with family, friends & even strangers (at times) is where we take our influence from. It's how we grew up. Although our roots are firmly in Italian cooking techniques, we love all cuisines & cooking styles at Atina Kitchen & this is reflected throughout our menus.

We went to this restaurant in the early evening and were immediately made to feel unwelcome because we hadn't booked. The restaurant was virtually empty and there was plenty of staff about. When we were eventually fed the food itself was ok and the drinks were not bad, just a little disappointed with the service.

Popped into this little gem for a drink, ended having bacon sandwiches too. I have been here before for takeaway sandwiches they are the best in town, made to order and customised to have what you want as your filling and they are truly scrumptious. Staff are really friendly. Cannot recommend this place enough, it’s a hidden gem in a beautiful city and it’s totally independent.

Wow. What a cool place Prohibition is.
Almost could not find the secret location due to the illegality of booze in 1920s America
The whole vibe, decor, atmosphere and music was spot on. Great selection of cocktails from a hidden menu.
A visit here is a must . 10/10

Went with a friend who lives locally. We had a wonderful lunch in such a welcoming and interesting location. The food was wonderful - simple and freshly cooked to order - Spinach pancakes, Serrano ham salad and the best Bakewell tart that I have EVER tasted. This is a brilliant place, so admire the whole Enterprise and will definately drive the 60+ miles to eat here again. Loved the whole ethos and eclectic crockery etc.

French Café-Bistro in the heart of Chester. Open for lunch, afternoon, Thursday, Friday and Saturday night

Reviewed By JezBayl - Stourbridge, United Kingdom

We were really looking forward to trying this place as we both love French food so much, however the meal was a tad disappointing. The mussels were good but not great and my chicken was okay but I wasn’t a big fan of the sauce. It wouldn’t stop us trying this place again when we are in town as we may have caught it on an off night.
