Castro Food Guide: 10 Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Castro

December 9, 2017 Etsuko Causey

A rainbow assortment of palafitos (wooden houses on stilts) are the unofficial calling card of Castro, the capital city of Chiloé Island. Once home to thousands of farmers and a target for European pirates, Castro was established in the 16th century and is Chilé’s third-oldest city. Highights here are the astonishing wooden church, an impressive contemporary art museum and the charming wharf in the Gamboa district.

Restaurant Sacho

Our restaurant rescues the typical and traditional food , like the can- cato salmon , crab chowder , fresh maricos , besides having a beautiful ocean view, the room combines modern and classical architecture Chilota and excellent service .

The most memorable thing about Sacho was the time it took. It took a long time to get our food and it took almost as long to pay the bill. The food itself was average. My wife had Congrio (Conger Eel) and said it was tough. As a vegetarian, I had a large plate of vegetables which I flavored with chili sauce. There were only two other tables occupied. At one, there were two children who continually ran around shouting. Neither their parents nor the staff made any attempt to quiet them.

Marion's Cafe Aleman

We arrived here expecting something much better, cleaner and a wider menu.
They had a wide option of cakes and kuchens, but for lunch they only had 3 different options, with not much flexibility.
Must say that everything tasted good, just good, and desserts were fine, but only fine.
The small dinning room not only had a cat wandering around, but also around 10 wasps!! Not nice at all to be eating trying not to be bitten by a killer bee.
The place is not cheap and they charged us 1.000 for each glass of tap water!
I guess tmit is hard to survive during he winter in the middle of the countryside, but they could do better.
Marion is really nice and let us feed the llamas, but this is not a place that I'd recommend or were I'll return.

Terrific food, great service, superb views and atmosphere, eclectic wine selection -- and on stilts! This tiny 10-table restaurant in a palafito overlooking Fiordo de Castro (or mud, depending on the tides) is a gem. A limited menu of mostly great local seafood, but ask for specials which aren't listed. Wines by the glass vary but are all special. The honey and yogurt desert is amazing -- the honey comes to the table IN the wooden beehive frame! WARNING: Cash Only!

Cafe del Puente

Reviewed By TravelReviewer1983 - London, United Kingdom

We came here based on the positive reviews given on TripAdvisor, and overall left satisfied.
The place is very clean and has a unique ambiance to it.
The staff are friendly and attentive.
We ordered two Fiordo Sandwiches which are basically Vegan burgers (4,500 pesos each), and one orange Juice (3,000 pesos).
The burgers were delicious and of a decent size. Would like to have seen a dip or some kind of a little side come with it.
The orange Juice was the worst one I've ever had! It was completely tasteless and a waste of money.
Please note that even if the taste was good, the size of the glass is very small for what they charge...
The toilets were well designed and clean.
They automatically add 10% to your bill (which I assume was for the service), which is pretty annoying too.
Overall, very good but with room for improvement.

I loved this place and visited it several times during my stay in Castro. I really enjoyed their specialty teas I tasted several flavors and enjoy the decoration and the vibe of the place. They offer a wonderful variety of cakes, I probably tasted 2 different cakes every day. It was wonderful to seat by the window and watch people walk on the streets. I loved the place.

We were staying at Palafito del Mar, the couple running the Cafe made us feel very welcome. The breakfast was great and finding someone passionate about coffee was a bonus. Another advantage was they spoke English and had a great understanding of what to do and where to go. There recommendations did not disappoint.

There are not enough superlatives to adequately describe the greatness of the food at this restaurant. It is a remarkably simple little place toward the end of the world in Chile. The food is out of the world. Brilliant choice of ingredients, unusual combinations and perfect presentation. Literally the best meal I have ever had. Go here if you are on the island. You will fall in love with the food. The service is a great match. English menu if you wish. Brilliant.
