South 9th Bistro

Scores of excellent online reviews and local word of mouth agree that South 9th Bistro is clearly one of Bozeman's top restaurants. Enjoy casual upscale dining in a completely revamped turn-of-the-century home. Located just south of Main Street on 9th Avenue, the Bistro is easy to find - by day, by its distinctive orange Victorian facade, and by night, by its many windows aglow with the warmth and comfort of the space within. Seating at the Bistro is available both inside and (seasonally) outside. Inside the Bistro, seating on the main floor is open and upbeat, while seating on the second floor is a bit cozier and more intimate. The second floor also features a separate private dining area that can comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests. The Bistro's kitchen is under the direction of Chef Ryan Trenton. Our seasonal dinner menu is broad in scope, featuring dishes such as Steak au Poivre served with dauphinoise potatoes and Pan-seared North Atlantic salmon with lemon- caper beurre blanc and wild rice. The menu also offers vegetarian options such as Ratatouille with polenta and sauteed haricots verts, and Roasted Butternut Squash Ravioli served with a sage-marsala sauce and carrot-ginger mousseline. All of our menu items are scratch-made in-house, including our pasta, baked goods and desserts, with numerous gluten-free options. The Bistro also features a full selection of wines and beers. South 9th Bistro is open five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday. Happy hour begins at 4pm, dinner service at 5pm. Reservations are recommended. Dinner fare is available for take-out during dinner hours.

This small restaurant is a delight. The dining room has a cozy feel without being close. The menu has a French flavor with plenty of American options. I had the Coquille St. Jacques, something not found everywhere. It was delicious. Another of our party proclaimed the Chicken Marsala to be excellent. The bread pudding was also deemed a great end to a fine meal. The service was perfect and I recommend this establishment highly.

Very interesting mix of ingredients, never before I had thali dish with beets nor mushrooms. Very unusual flavour. Relatively small variety of vegetarian main dishes, fortunately they were able to substitute paneer for chicken, therefore all three vegetarians in our party had different main course. Great deserts.

Main Street Overeasy

Main Street Overeasy is a popular Downtown Bozeman Breakfast Restaruant. Opened in 1998 by Chef Erik Carr, Main Street Overeasy is the locals' choice for breakfast!

The cinnamon roll is soft and warm and gooey. It's all things wonderful. After that I had the scramble special which was good but nothing special. The biscuits were very good!

The husband got the chicken fried steak, which was ENORMOUS!

Highly recommend. Service was a little slow. It took along time to get a water refill that only came once.

Otherwise, great breakfast place.

Western Cafe

Located in downtown Bozeman.

Reviewed By RHoward2014 - Bozeman, Montana

The Western Cafe has been receiving good reviews for some time and I now know why. This was my first time here (I just don't eat breakfast out often) and enjoyed it very much. My husband and I shared the cinnamon roll. I think next time I will ask them to put a little butter on top - but it was very good. You're going to want to share! We both ordered the daily special of biscuits and gravy served with an egg and hash browns. Way too much food but somehow we managed to lick our plates! Looking forward to coming back here.

Montana Ale Works

Reviewed By pghbmnj - Bozeman, Montana

We had a great tasting dinner with friends at “Aleworks”. As usual, the portions were ample and the food just delicious, but the place is so loud, it is hard to chat at a civilized decibel, let alone hear what our friends had to say...and we weren’t even there on a weekend! Be prepared to wait a bit for a table, as Aleworks is very popular, but the food is great and hearty!

Perfect place for a group (we were 5) because their food requires lotsa sampling to unpack all its flavor & variety. Our server, Fletch, was helpful and quick, and the wine list was small but sufficient and reasonably-priced. Highlights were the short rib cavatelli and local cheese board ... with the BREAD!!

Dave's Sushi-Off Main

Reviewed By LorraineMontana - Bozeman

Our meal at Dave's today was excellent: a starter of hot and sour soup chock full of ginger, garlic, red pepper flakes, with a bit of smokiness from cubes of their house-smoked pork belly. It's spicy hot, not overly vinegared and would be perfect medicine for a cold. We also ordered broiled hamachi collar. It was lightly glazed in ponzu and was succulent perfection, not dry. A great appetizer to show off one's skill with chopsticks, but they also gave us a fork in case we needed to save face. Next was Dave's Sashimi salad, a generous bed of greens, cucumbers and avocado topped with our choice of sashimi (we chose salmon) and a tangy, creamy wasabi-ginger dressing and a scoop of sushi rice. It was my favorite dish, would be a filling meal on its own and was a great deal at $12. Lastly, my husband (a ramen snob who has traveled all over Japan) ordered the ramen bowl, a generous pile of ramen noodles topped with thick slabs of smoked pork belly, a perfectly poached egg and a shallow ladling of stock. The stock was dark, had a dominant smoked pork flavor and left us both bemoaning how much we prefer deep-bowl ramen in a generous pool of good Tonkotsu broth, but all-in-all it was a very good food experience and the service is super-friendly and accommodating.

We ate breakfast here and loved it. Very cool decor, friendly and attentive host and host, and creative entrees. The various Benedicts and omelettes were very good. We tried a couple of them. I'm usually not one for home fries, but their heirloom home fries are crispy and delicious! The citrus arugula is a yummy accompaniment to the meal. And the coffee is excellent! I love that they serve breakfast all day. If you're not in the mood for breakfast, amazing looking lunch offerings start at 11:00.

Plonk

Reviewed By BozemanTrudeman - Bozeman

The menu lists something called "Blue Point Crab Cakes." Where I come from, "blue point" refers to oysters, not crabs. There is something called a "blue crab" so that must be where the confusion starts. The food here is very pretty. Wait staff is "modern college student," which means barely trained at all with a nonchalant attitude. But to be fair, this is typical of Bozeman, where the students would rather be in the trout stream or on the mountain. This town is far from a coast, which means seafood is a rarity. Diners here come for the beauty of the surroundings, not for the food choices, which are limited.
