The Old Farmhouse Laufas

Reviewed By Barheat - Hamilton, Canada

Laufas Folk Museum is a complex of turf roof houses that expanded over time. The style of turf clad timber building stretches back to the Middle Ages. A number of these houses are linked together by passageways. The lower floors were the living spaces with the upper floors mainly used for sleeping quarters. The last resident of these houses (to 1936) was the minister for the church on the property. The host at the museum provides a direct link as she was baptized by that minister.
Two parlor rooms are fairly modern with wood floors and furniture. One was used as a dining room. The rest of the lower rooms are connected by dirt floors and flagstones. In the kitchen pots were heated over open fires. There is an opening in the roof for the smoke to escape. Overall, an interesting view into life in Iceland in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
There is a small gift shop and snack bar by the parking lot. Washrooms are on a lower level with outside access from the back. The site is not wheelchair accessible.

Arctic Botanical Gardens (Lystigardurinn)

Reviewed By Afoodie65 - Cold Spring, New York

Just up the hill from center city Akurevri is a botanical garden where one can wander around and see various flowers and plantings. The day we were there, downtown was crowded with tourists while the Gardens were almost empty except for a few families with little children and a limited number of tourists.
Beautiful flowers and vegetation.
A must see and an escape from the city hustle & bustle.

Akureyrarkirkja

Walking up the stairs to the top was beautiful but tiring. But those dreamy sky, colors and gorgeous flowers beds compensated for it. It a great church as designed by the same architect as Hallgrimskirkja. The view from the top was amazing. Don't miss it if you are in this area.

This is a good area for kids and adults with a good ski school that operates during weekends. It's so close to town that you can take a taxi for a minimal cost and the apre ski is basically every restaurant in town. Really cheap to ski and rent and you can buy a pass that gets you to 3 other resorts and that gives you the chance to watch nature from different sides of the North.

Attended Mass - very cosy, people equally warm. There was an exquisite brass tabernacle which was etched and a hand tapestered altar cloth. Very pleased I went.
