10 Things to Do in Morro de Sao Paulo That You Shouldn't Miss

April 5, 2018 Fernanda Pittenger

Part of Morro de Sao Paulo’s charm is its mix of upscale, new hotels and restaurants with older, shabbier pousadas and taverns. This car-free and carefree island has just one road and a handful of beaches… it’s a wonderful place to get away from it all.

Great beach, the water gets really warm in the afternoon. However there are some small jellyfish in the water that can burn you pretty bad if you stay on the water too long in the late afternoon when the sea is rising and the water is at its warmest. Ask the locals and they will be able to tell which hours that is more or less likely. Don't miss visiting though, it is a great beach, only be a little more careful about swimming close to the shore.

I prefer the 4th beach because it is cleaner but this beach is good for those pics which portray you alone on a big white sand deserted beach. There are two or three hotels if you want to stay there but It is too far to walk anywhere else.

Even though we stayed at an inn only steps from the lighthouse, we were not allowed to visit it as it is closed off season. Nevertheless, we did admire it every evening as it illuminated the area and truly believe that, without its majestic presence crowning the hill, Morro de Sao Paulo would simply not be what it is.

Sitting atop of the main square this imposing building was a superb example of early Portuguese architecture. Unlike many I have seen the interior was fairly starc by comparison, but never the less. Well worth a visit and a photograph to remember..

Beach is great to embark on the boats that take you around the island. Not the greatest for beach bums since at high tide the sand is gone up to the board walk. Some great pousadas (Corais) in this stretch but prefer quarta praia for sincere tranquility and joy of beach life.
