Listowel Castle

Reviewed By Hannah S

There is a free guided tour regularly and our tour guide, Cormack, was a absolute hoot! Such interesting information and his passion for the castle was infectious. Hilarious and engaging stories about different rooms and families that lived there. However, the stairs inside the castle are steep and narrow so people with reduced mobility will unfortunately have to give it a miss. The tour went for about 20 mins and there is free parking behind the castle. An absolute must!

Lartigue Monorail

Visit our Monorail Train and Museum. Take a trip back in time and see what the Lartigue Monorail looked like this re-creation of the historical railway that ran from Listowel to Ballybunion between 1888 and 1924. Footage in our film is over 100 years old and gives an insight into the train long ago and then shows the re-making of the Train. Spend an hour or so altogether re-living the past!

The Seanchai Kerry Writer's Museum

Seanchaí – Kerry Writers’ Museum honours over eighty writers from Kerry over the centuries, some of which have become national and international figures in the world of literature. It is a museum of words and spirit where the imaginative worlds of the great Kerry writers are evoked

Reviewed By heidev2015 - Cahersiveen, Ireland

The official name is Seanchai' Kerry Literary and Cultural Center, and it is located just across the Square in Listowel. It provides a wonderful opportunity to get acquainted with Listowel's famous sons, the authors and poets born in and around this Kerry town. The tour introduces the visitor to each writer; in each of five rooms there is a life-size paper mache statue of the writer, and a recording in his voice of excerpts from plays or poems. The tour guide is often a local actor who demonstrates what the writer was like by Reading from novels or plays, and presenting a wonderful overview of the lives of these famous Irish citizens. My favorite author is John B Keane who is perhaps best known for the play "The Field" which was made into a movie; others might recognize Maurice Walsh whose novel "The Quiet Man" was made into a movie featuring John Wayne and Maurine O'Hara. The other writers on display are Brendan Kennelly, Bryan MacMahon, and George Fitzmaurice. Listowel is truly a cultural center of County Kerry, and the annual Writers' Week celebrates past and present writers, novelists, and poets. The Writers' Museum is a wonderful introduction to this land of Saints and Scholars and not to be missed.

Listowel Plaster Relief

Reviewed By Lor2ie - Listowel, Ireland

A distinctive feature of the streets of Listowel is the colour and variety of its shop front designs. Most notable are The Maid of Erin in The Square, The Harp & Lion and The Emporium in Church Street. These unique items of plasterwork are the work of local craftsman Pat McAuliffe (1846-1921). The Maid of Erin depicts a Romantic image of Mother Ireland surrounded by a harp, a wolfhound and other symbols of Eire.
