Deutsches Auswandererhaus

In Europe’s largest and most modern theme museum on the topic of emigration, the German Emigration Center, Bremerhaven (Deutsches Auswandererhaus), you can authentically follow the paths of 7 Million Europeans who left their homeland via the port of Bremerhaven, Germany in search for a better life in the New World and begin a personal search for your own ancestors using our state of the art research facilities.

The AH is a historically interesting and very informative modern museum which has already won international awards! It's a hands-on, get-the-real-feel museum but to my mind rather suitable for adults than for children. There's a lot to read, research and listen to which you can only grasp if you have enough background knowledge.
I went there with a group of teens, and we got a guided tour which I do not recommend! Not because of the quality of the guide but because every individual should have the chance to experience every section of this museum on his own pace. Only this way can you really feel yourself into the hardship that emigrants faced at that time. You may also want to do research about your own ancestors rather than being pushed through the museum GroupWise in one hour and being pulled away from touching experience.
Don't get me wrong! Again, the guide did a good job but tours are just not recommendable.
Time: Reckon on a good two hours to spend if you are really interested in the topic.
Welcome to Bremerhaven and enjoy !
Best

A marvellous meal, dinner for four. We had steak and all the trimmings. Starting with bread plate, the soup, a tasty, salad and then the steak. Cooked to perfection English rare, juicy and very tender. Highly recommended, had no room for a sweet. Excellent meal and friendly, obliging staff.

Klimahaus Bremerhaven 8° Ost

Reviewed By Pamela L - Romsey, United Kingdom

This cliamte house is in an amazing building right on the waterfront in Bremerhaven. The information brochures are fabulous but the reality of the visit did not live up to my expectations.
The concept is very interesting - to look at communities along the 80 degree east longitude in contrasting climate zones. The day I visited there was an imperceptible change in temperature as you walked around. I was expecting something much more marked. Some of the climate pods were inaccessible which was disappointing. The quality of the information about climate change though was excellent in both German and English. The display on co2 emissions and how common household applicances add to the world's probblems gave a lot of room for thougt. The finale is a computer games room to test how much you have learned through some ipad games - unfortunately though the instructions are only in German which is a disapoinment when the exhibition up to that point had all been in English too - I'll never know what my score might have been had I truly understood the instructions.
Nice cafe, good lifts so fine for those with impaired mobility. Not cheap to go in about £12 per adult. Great shop with all sorts of really interesting climate/geography related purchases. Worth a visit if you are in the area - not worh a specific trip though in my opinion.

The submarine is well preserved, admission fee is cheap. I would have wanted to go inside but my husband's back problem prevented us from going any further. so we merely got an impression as we were allowed in the reception area.

German Maritime Museum

Enjoying both navel and civilian maritime history and museums, I have visited many museums from England, Denmark, France, Sweden and Germany. This was one of the best. Many interactive displays for adults and kids and lots of displays, artifacts and historical models. Not as overwhelming as the museum in Hamburg and easier to get around. We spent several hours and could have spent for if the baby had cooperated. The radio controlled boat basin was great fun! Plan a day for all the other outside sailing ships, submarine and other boats.

I visited this place with 2 families during our vacations August 2015. There are many fish restaurants and all of them present wonderful eating experience and environment. The place is not far from center of Bremerhaven (3-4 km). We had a local family which helped us a lot in selecting the delicacies. Quality superb with quite reasonable price (approx 20-25€ /per person).

Zoo am Meer

Reviewed By Sofia B

The zoo has an adequate size and a variety of animals. Big and small, warm- and cold blooded, fish, birds, just everything. The general theme seems to be "animals of the far north and south", so don't expect lions and elephants but rather polar bears and sea lions. They somehow got chimpanzees though. The zoo is great for kids and it is also barrier free (good for disabled people, elderly, etc.). The informational signs are in German though, apart from the name of the animal. I did not ask for an English guide though.
Overall it was a nice 2-hours-journey and I would definitely go again!

This is a fascinating opportunity to watch cargo containers being loaded and unloaded. It depends upon how busy the port is at any moment but if you catch a busy time you can see your next Television or kitchen sink moving past you in an endless ballet of enormous containers.

Historisches Museum Bremerhaven

Reviewed By Heiko A - Oldenburg, Germany

Another reviewer wrote "they ought to advertize more". Yes, this museum has a lot more about emigrants than the famed Auswandererhaus. Of course it also has a lot about Bremerhaven's history, but then this history is very much about emigration (and about fishing). Did you know that Elvis came to Germany via Bremerhaven ? And friends of my family went to the US via Bremerhaven.
The museum is a must-see. Also the museum's computers offer access to many important emigrants records.
